If you’ve got heavy shedders like our Alaskan Klee Kai dogs, you’re probably tired of finding dog hair on the sofa, floor and your clothes.
We’ve spent years living with dog hair everywhere, whether it’s hair accumulating in a corner of our home or avoiding wearing black clothes because of hair on the sofa.
But we did a deep dive into the best dog grooming tools on Reddit earlier this year, and we unearthed some products that have transformed how we groom Copper and Skye.
In this article, we’re going to share five dog grooming tools that we believe every dog owner needs, especially if you’ve got double-coated dogs who shed a lot like us.
“Chom chom“
This is simply a must for velvet sofas. We recently changed the covers on our sofa from white boucle to forest green velvet. This allowed us to purchase one of our absolute favorite tools for keeping on top of our Alaskan Klee Kai’s hair. The ACE2ACE Pet Hair Removal Tool, or chom chom as we call it in our house, is amazing at cleaning our velvet cushions.
We have purchased these for friends and family members with pets who shed a lot. They all love it! Our toddler is obsessed with using the chom chom whenever she spots a Copper or Skye hair on the sofa. She can help clean up, too.
Our Alaskan Klee Kai dogs benefit, too. The chom chom is very quiet unlike the vacuum cleaner that’s bulky and noisy. Copper and Skye don’t even bother to move when we’ve got the chom chom out!
Dog fur blower
You’ve probably seen huskies getting the dog fur blower treatment on social media. They were a viral trend for a while. We’ve never taken Copper or Skye to professional groomers. So you won’t have seen us post such a video. However, we do have a dog fur blower!
Yasmin decided to invest in EGFKI pet blow drier. It has four different nozzles alongside adjustable speed and heater. It is great for dislodging loose fur in their coats when they are blowing out their coats. This usually happens at least twice a year.
It isn’t overly noisy, but Copper and Skye are a little wary. Having said that, it’s so effective when it comes to blowing their coats we couldn’t live without it now.
Undercoat raker
Alaskan Klee Kai are a doubled-coated breed. They’ve got a coarse outer coat but dense, thick inner coat. They shed a lot, especially at the changing of the seasons. We needed a brush that could handle the inner coat when shedding season is upon us.
This is the first brush that Yasmin and I start our Alaskan Klee Kai’s grooming routine. We use the Maxpower Planet Original Pet Grooming Rake once we’ve finished with the fur blower. It’s the first brush in our three-brush regimen for a reason.
We never cut our Alaskan Klee Kai’s undercoat. This rake gently pulls out the undercoat that is being shed, especially during shedding season. It’s made a huge difference because it gets so much of the shedding fur out.
It’s important to carefully follow the instructions. You want to use the correct angle, be gentle and go slowly to minimize any pulling. Our dogs don’t mind being brushed with this rake provided we follow the aforementioned steps diligently.
SleekEZ
Next up we’ve got the SleekEZ Dog Brush which is designed for grooming dogs who shed a lot. We love this brush and use it as the second step on our Alaskan Klee Kai dogs. It does a great job of getting so much loose fur out.
Described as the perfect undercoat brush, it’s been designed to gently grab at the tips of the hair to “extract from the skin without painful tugging”. Once again, we go slowly and gently while using this brush on Copper and Skye.
They often roll onto their bellies like they’re expecting a belly rub. If you’re patient with the SleekEZ and take your time, you’ll get a lot of fur out.
Double sided shedding blade
The Wahl shedding blade is the final tool that we use on Copper and Skye before we let them roam the house again! It’s probably my favorite tool because it’s quite relaxing to use on their coats. It’s almost like a massage ball or something!
Once we’ve blown them, used the first two brushes, we get the Wahl shedding blade to leave their coats looking sleek.
It’s a double-sided shedding blade – we start with the small side before we switch to the big side. This gets out those last pieces of fur that the other brushes have missed. We still get a surprising amount of hair out!
Roborock QRevo Master
We’ve tested a lot of different robotic vacuums over the years. We’ve been sent samples by iRobot (aka the Roomba), eufy and many others. However, the Roborock QRevo Master is the only robotic vacuum that we’ve purchased with our hard-earned cash.
Yasmin did a deep dive into the best robotic vacuums for dogs that shed a lot. Copper and Skye shed a lot, especially during the changing of the seasons. The Roborock picks up so much hair. It’s really effective.
It has great sensors that can pick up furniture or other objects in the way. The Roborock has a mopping feature, which we love to use in the winter when Copper and Skye leave paw prints inside after their work.
Robotic vacuums are a significant investment. We paid just under $1,000 with a discount to get our hands on this robotic vacuum. Like I said, this wasn’t gifted. We invested in this vacuum to maintain our home’s cleanliness.
Wrapping Up
So that’s a wrap on the dog grooming tools that we used on a weekly basis with our Alaskan Klee Kai dogs.
It’s been transformational discovering these tools to help us stay on top of Copper and Skye’s shedding.
Previously we relied on one brush, the Tangle Teezer, which worked well but wasn’t nearly as effective as our current setup.
