Badlands Ranch Vs Tally’s Ranch: What’s The Difference?

Badlands Ranch vs Tally's Ranch: What's The Difference

Last Updated on June 23, 2025 by Kieran Beckles

Are you struggling to figure out the difference between Badlands Ranch and Tally’s Ranch?

These are two new pet food companies that offer dog owners the chance to adopt a difference approach to their furry friend’s nutrition.

Badlands Ranch offers air-dried and freeze-dried dog food, and Tally’s Ranch created a freeze-dried range.

We’ve tested both of these brands on our Alaskan Klee Kai dogs, and there was a clear winner when it came to the taste test.

In this article, I’ll share the differences and similarities between these dog food delivery companies to help pet parents trying to decide between the two.

Badlands Ranch Vs Tally’s Ranch: Who do we recommend?

I’ll cut to the chase if you’re interested in discovering our recommendation. We’d suggest trying Tally’s Ranch before Badlands Ranch.

If you’re familiar with Life With Klee Kai, you’ll know I’ve got a picky eater: Skye. She’s extremely fussy when it comes to her dog food.

However, she enjoyed eating Tally’s Ranch when we tested their freeze-dried food on our picky mini husky. She consistently finished her meals.

Her brother, Copper, is food motivated, and unsurprisingly, he was quick to finish his Tally’s Ranch portion and then lick the bowl clean.

My Klee Kai dogs were a little more hit and miss with Badlands Ranch. Copper liked their treat-like air-dried food, but Skye showed some fussiness.

From a dog owner’s perspective, I preferred the ordering experience with Tally’s Ranch because they offered a more seamless subscription process.

There isn’t much difference in price: I paid $170.85 for Badlands Ranch and $171.60 for Tally’s Ranch.

If you’re stuck between these two dog food companies, I’d recommend starting with Tally’s Ranch before turning to Badlands Ranch.

Who Are Tally’s Ranch?

Tally’s Ranch is a new player in the dog food subscription market after their founder, Michael, left The Farmer’s Dog and launched his freeze-dried range.

I was drawn to Tally’s Ranch because they offer the benefits of raw dog food in a convenient freeze-dried format. I felt this would be a good fit for my dogs.

Tally’s Ranch offers two recipes: beef and chicken. It’s not the most extensive range, but their recipes are made with high-quality ingredients.

Their recipes contain 70% meat (their website claims that they’re the first company in the US to publish the percentage of meat content in their recipes).

Perhaps this high meat content helped convince Copper and Skye to test their recipes. It was a success with both of my Klee Kai finishing their meals.

I signed up for a trial through their website, and their onboarding questionnaire is easy to follow if you’re accustomed to dog food subscription brands.

Tally’s Ranch offers a golden scoop with your first order, but it isn’t custom for your pet. I’d love to see this change in the future to make mealtime easy. I’d like to see more recipes added to their range, too.

While Tally’s Ranch isn’t the most affordable dry dog food brand that we’ve reviewed, I consider them to be competitively priced, and most importantly, my dogs like their food.

Who Is Badlands Ranch?

Badlands Ranch is a little older than Tally’s Ranch – but not by much. It was launched by actress Katherine Heigl in 2023, and we tested it out soon after.

Badlands Ranch appealed to me because they offer air-dried dog food, and at the time I tested their range, we were feeding Sundays Food For Dogs.

They use a gentle air-drying method to create their air-dried range, which includes beef, chicken, lamb & venison, and wild fish & turkey.

Badlands Ranch launched a freeze-dried range in 2025, and we’ll be updating this comparison article once we’ve tested it on Copper and Skye.

Their air-dried food was a hit with my male dog Copper, but his sister Skye was pickier. She would eat it when used as a treat, but there were leftovers in her bowl on a regular basis.

I like that Badlands Ranch sells two types of pet food and four recipes with their air-dried range, but they don’t offer a questionnaire to get a custom meal plan for your pup.

There’s less personalization with their service than Tally’s Ranch and other dog food subscription services such as Sundays, UnKibble and The Farmer’s Dog. But I still consider their dog food a good option if you’ve got pup like Copper.

Conclusion

We’ve reached the end of our Badlands Ranch and Tally’s Ranch comparison article.

There is little to separate these two dog food brands when it comes to the quality of their ingredients and the considerate cooking processes.

They don’t differ much on price, either. Badlands Ranch is less than a dollar cheaper than Tally’s Ranch when I signed up for both companies.

However, I’d recommend starting with Tally’s Ranch over Badlands Ranch because Skye preferred the former, and they offer more personalization.
