If you’re trying to decide between the Fable and the Impact Dog Crate, you’re not alone.
Fable Vs Impact Quick Verdict |
If I had to choose between the Fable Dog Crate and the Impact Dog Crate, my recommendation would depend entirely on your dog's temperament and how you plan to use the crate. For most crate-trained dogs, I'd choose the Fable Dog Crate. It looks like a piece of furniture rather than a traditional crate, blends seamlessly into a living room, and provides a comfortable den-like space for dogs who simply need a safe place to relax. It's the crate we'd choose if aesthetics and everyday home use were the top priorities. However, if your dog is an escape artist, struggles with separation anxiety, travels frequently, or has a history of damaging crates, I'd recommend the Impact Dog Crate. Its aluminum construction, collapsible design, and focus on security make it one of the toughest dog crates we've tested. It's also the crate we've repeatedly returned to for our own dogs when durability and containment matter most. Bottom line: Choose the Fable if you want the best-looking crate for a crate-trained dog. Choose the Impact if security, durability, and peace of mind are your priorities. |
I’ve tested the Fable and Impact Dog Crate on my two Alaskan Klee Kai dogs for the past three years, and they both serve the needs of different pet owners.
While they’re often considered as alternatives, the Fable and Impact Dog Crates serve different purposes, depending on your dog and their personality.
The Fable is designed to blend into your home, unlike your typical dog crate, which is often an eyesore. While it’s aesthetically pleasing, it serves a function. With ample ventilation and a smooth garage-style door, it provided a den-like feel for my Klee Kai dogs. Something they love.
Impact Dog Crate is built to be durable, practical, and security. The collapsible dog crate can be quickly collapsed and reassembled, so it doesn’t need to stay in one place. Given the metal design, it’s a popular choice for pet owners with anxious or destructive dogs. Copper and Skye felt secure in it.
In this comparison review, I’ll share the biggest differences between the Fable and Impact dog crates, including design, durability, escape resistance, ease of cleaning, portability, value for money, and which I’d buy again if I were looking for a new dog crate in 2026.

My Experience Testing Both Crates

I’ve been using Impact Dog Crates since 2023. I’ve tested the Collapsible, High Anxiety and Stationary dog crates made by this brand.
Copper and Skye have also enjoyed using Impact Dog Crates because they all provide a sense of security. My Klee Kai crave a den-like feel.
For the purposes of this comparison review, I’m going to focus on Impact’s collapsible dog crate because I believe it’s the most functional of the three.

Read my dedicated review of this crate.
You can collapse it in a couple of minutes (once you’ve done it a few times) and reassemble it at the same speed. This gives pet owners flexibility.
My dogs have also been comfortable and safe in the Impact Collapsible Dog Crate, and I often find them in it during the day when they want a break.
We got our hands on the Fable Dog Crate over a year ago. I’ve wanted to test it for some time because I love how it looks like a piece of furniture rather than a crate.
It’s currently sitting in my living room next to the sofa, and it’s the dog crate we use most frequently throughout the day because it never moves.
I typically use the collapsible dog crate in the car or when I need to have a crate in a specific room because it’s easier to move and transport.
Fable vs Impact: What’s The Biggest Difference?

The Fable dog crate was designed to look like a piece of furniture that fits seamlessly into your home’s interior design. It isn’t an eyesore.
While it looks beautiful, it still effectively keeps your dog safely contained in the crate, with a garage-style door and ventilation windows.
Learn more about Impact.
Here's my indepth review of their collapsible crate.
The Impact collapsible dog crate prioritizes durability with a reinforced metal frame, a paddle-latch door, extra locks, and smaller ventilation holes to prevent chewing.
Its collapsible design helps pet owners keep their dog safe whether they’re at home, in the car, or on vacation. It can move around with you.
Design & Appearance

The Fable Dog crate is made from wood. You can get it in a signature finish or a walnut finish. The door can be either acrylic, white, or omit the door.
It looks more like a coffee or end table rather than a dog crate with a rectangular design. There are ventilation windows running around the sides and back.
My wife, who has a background in arts and fashion, is enamored with the appearance, as it matches our walnut-colored hardwood floors.
The Impact Collapsible Dog Crate still has an elevated appearance when compared to your typical wire dog crate. It matched the white walls of our home.
You can pick from 10 different colors, but I’ve always opted for white. It has diamond-shaped ventilation holes on the front, back, and sides.
Winner: The Fable wins in terms of design and appearance.
Durability

The Fable dog crate is made from wood. The Impact crate is made from high-grade aluminum. You can guess which is more durable!
Impact designs its crates to last, and my collapsible crate has held up well over the past three years, unlike plastic or wire crates I’ve used before.
It claims to be the “most durable crate on the market”. Is that true? Well, I’ve reviewed Impact, Fable, Diggs, Gunner, Kindtail and Ruffland. Impact has held up the best against wear and tear.
Revol or Impact?
Find out the answer here.
Copper and Skye are crate-trained and aren’t destructive. They’ve never been big chewers. For that reason, I feel comfortable using the Fable dog crate. I know they won’t damage it.
However, my Fable crate does have a few minor scratches from moving it around while filming YouTube content.
Winner: The Impact is more durable than the Fable because that’s one of the primary purposes of its design.
Escape Resistance

To be transparent, if your number one motivation for buying a dog crate is an escape-proof crate, you should go for the High Anxiety over Collapsible.
But I’ve found Impact’s collapsible crate to be more than adept at keeping my dogs enclosed safely inside whenever I’ve had to put them away.
While Alaskan Klee Kai are known as escape artists, they’re not particularly powerful. Having said that, they’ve never escaped the collapsible crate.
It has three locks (one on the door and two at the top of the crate), so your dog will be secure. You can add the high-grade aluminum materials used.
My dogs haven’t escaped the Fable dog crate, either. However, it doesn’t have as many containment features as the Impact.
Winner: It has to be the Impact because I’ve used it for three years, and my mini huskies have never escaped.
Ease Of Assembly

If this were a question of High Anxiety and the Fable, the Fable would win. The Fable takes around 10 minutes to assemble (High Anxiety took me an hour).
The Fable Dog Crate comes with several parts when you open the box. You’ll need to use the screws, wrenches and Allen keys to put it together. It’s very simple.
But the Collapsible crate is much easier to assemble than the Fable (and the High Anxiety). It comes collapsed, and you essentially assemble it as you would any time the crate has collapsed.
The best collapsible crate for small dogs?
Here's my rankings.
I’ve been using the crate for three years, so I’ve become quick at collapsing and assembling. However, it took me around five minutes the first time I put it together.
The more practice you get, the quicker you’ll become.
Winner: The Impact Collapsible crate is easier to assemble, and you don’t need to fuss with as many screws and allen keys.
Cleaning & Maintenance

There’s no real difference in cleaning and maintenance between the Fable and Impact dog crates.
I use a vacuum to remove the dog hair, and I can wipe down both surfaces with a cloth.
If you have a dog that’s not potty-trained, the Impact would be better. Seeing as it’s a metal surface, there won’t be any absorption.
The Fable is made from wood, so it’s slightly more at risk if your dog has an accident.
Winner: Impact edges the Fable when it comes to cleaning and maintenance because of the metal design.
Travel & Portability

The Impact Collapsible crate is extremely portable and ideal for travel because it collapses into a suitcase. We have used it many times in the car.
Once it’s collapsed, it’s easy to carry thanks to the military-grade handles and compact shape. Even Yasmin finds it easy to move when collapsed.
It takes just a couple of minutes to reassemble. This allows dog owners to bring their dogs in the car, whether they’re going on a road trip or vacation.
Fable or Diggs?
Discover my verdict.
While the Impact crate hasn’t passed crash-safety testing, you can read customer reviews in which the crate has saved dogs’ lives.
The Fable isn’t portable and extremely heavy to move. Just like a piece of furniture in your home, once you find its place, you won’t want to move it.
Winner: The Impact collapsible crate is a far superior option for dog owners who want a crate that can be used for travel.
Comfort & Ventilation

The Collapsible crate has diamond-shaped ventilation holes running around the sides and back, and a reinforced front door with them.
I’ve used this crate for over three years, and my Klee Kai continue to enjoy the den-like feel. However, it is made from aluminum so it can be noisy.
The Fable has a wooden design and a softer finish. Even when I open and close the garage-style door, there’s minimum sound. Perfect for my skittish Klee Kai.
It has square-shaped ventilation holes all around the crate, including the acrylic door. So ample airflow without sacrificing that den-like feel.
Winner: The Fable edges the Impact crate when it comes to comfort, purely because it makes less noise in day-to-day use.
Which Crate Is Better For Puppies?
I’d recommend starting with the Impact Collapsible Dog Crate if you’re looking to invest in a crate for your puppy.
Because it’s made of aluminum, your puppy will be less likely to cause damage. The ventilation holes are smaller, which should prevent chewers.
It’s easier to clean as a metallic surface that won’t absorb any bodily fluids.
If you’re confident your puppy is already well-trained, the Fable could be an option. But with a hefty price tag, it’s a risk.
Verdict: Impact Dog Crate
Which Crate Is Better For Escape Artists?

If you’ve got an escape artist, you’re going to want to go for Impact over Fable. I’d actually recommend their High Anxiety Crate, which they describe as “escape-proof”.
However, the Collapsible crate will do a good job if you want the ability to collapse the crate. I’ve had it for three years, and it’s proven extremely durable.
While the Fable is a secure crate, it is made from wood with a plastic front door. My dogs would never be able to escape it, but they’re small breeds.
For pet owners with a big, powerful dog, it could be a risk.
Verdict: Impact Dog Crate
Which Crate Is Better For Apartment Living?
This might be a matter of taste and space efficiency.
I’d go for the Fable Dog Crate for apartment living because it’s a beautiful dog crate that can double up as a coffee table, end table, or bedside table.
If space is at a premium, you want to be efficient. The Fable allows for that.
We’ve lived in apartments in California, London and Bath. I would have loved to have owned a Fable Dog Crate rather than a wire crate.
The Impact crate has the advantage of collapsing for storage when not in use.
Verdict: Fable Dog Crate
Which One Is Better Value?

This is a tough decision. I believe the Fable and Impact are both great dog crates that can last the lifetime of your dog.
The Impact Collapsible Dog Crate starts at $810 for the medium, $860 for the intermediate, and $910 for the large.
You can save 25% off your first order with my discount code “KLEEKAI” to make a significant saving.
The Fable Dog Crate starts at $799 for the small signature finish or $1099 for the small walnut finish. The large signature finish costs $2499, and the large walnut finish costs $2999.
You can save 15% off your Fable dog crate order with my discount code “KLEEKAI202515”.
Verdict: The Impact is a better value if you’ve got a medium or large dog and functionality matters more than appearance.

Fable vs Impact: Which One Did My Dogs Prefer?

I tested the Fable and Impact on my Alaskan Klee Kai dogs for 12 months. We’ve used them regularly to test out their comfort and functionality.
It’s important to note Copper and Skye are crate trained, like being in crates and don’t have any anxious or destructive tendencies in crates.
When I placed both in the same room, I found Copper and Skye gravitated more towards the Fable. But admittedly, it’s by the sofa where we sit.
My Klee Kai dogs have been using the Impact Collapsible Dog Crate for over three years, since we first got our hands on it in 2023.
So that crate has a history of successful use with my skittish Klee Kai dogs. I can’t deny that. It’s proven durable and reliable.
Verdict: I believe my Klee Kai slightly prefers the Fable over the Impact, but ultimately, there wasn’t much difference.
Fable Vs Impact: My Final Verdict

It’s a really tough decision, but despite the Impact winning most of the categories in this comparison article, I do love my Fable dog crate.
If I’m looking at the best dog crate through the lens of wanting a dog crate to stay in one area of my home, it’s the Fable. I don’t plan to move it.
I have it in my living room, and my Alaskan Klee Kai dogs regularly use it to take a break from the craziness of live with a young child.
I’ve got other dog crates for other purposes, such as the Gunner G1 Kennel for the car and the Impact Collapsible Crate for vacations or extra security.
For dog owners who need a crate to serve multiple functions, Impact is the better choice because it’s way more versatile than the Fable.
But if your criteria are a dog crate that sits in a living space in your home and doesn’t move, then I love the appearance and design of the Fable.
