Are you looking at fresh dog food services but you want to know whether The Farmer’s Dog or Nom Nom is more expensive before you commit to a subscription plan?

There’s no shortage of fresh dog food companies in the USA that offer fresh food recipes to provide pet parents with the chance to feed balanced, complete and vet formulated dog food to their pets.

However, fresh dog food brands can be slightly off-putting because they’ve earned a reputation for being expensive when compared to regular dog food such as dry dog food or wet dog food you can find at your local grocery store or pet store.

Having signed up to a number of fresh dog food companies over the past seven years, we’re in a good position to share our pricing insights when it comes to The Farmer’s Dog recipes and Nom Nom’s food.

The Farmer’s Dog Vs Nom Nom: Our Price

The Farmer’s Dog (Photo: Life With Klee Kai)

To start our price breakdown with Nom Nom and The Farmer’s Dog, I’m going to provide readers with the cost of our subscription plan with these two dog food brands in the spirit of transparency.

For context, Skye is a six-year old spayed Alaskan Klee Kai, who weights 10lbs and needs to gain a little weight. She’s a picky eater who likes fresh meals provided she gets to eat a variety of protein sources.

Copper, on the other hand, is a six-year old neutered Alaskan Klee Kai, who weighs 12lbs and needs to lose a little weight. Copper has some food allergies but he isn’t a fussy eater. He loves to eat his food and his treats.

I wanted to provide this information because Nom Nom and The Farmer’s Dog ask basic questions about your dog such as your dog’s age, dog’s breed, dog’s weight, your dog’s diet, your dog’s health, how many dog treats they get and whether they’ve got any food allergies.

Once I complete the sign up process for The Farmer’s Dog, we paid $2.74 per day ($19.18 per week) for Skye’s meals and $2.39 per day ($16.73 per week) for Copper’s meals.

Our 30-day price with The Farmer’s Dog was $153.90, but we opted for deliveries every 40 days so we were charged $205.20 every 40 days for their fresh food recipes.

Next, I completed Nom Nom’s questionnaire to give their frozen meals a try. Before I share our price, I wanted to highlight that Nom Nom’s meals vary in price unlike The Farmer’s Dog.

For example, beef mash is the most expensive of their recipes, pork potluck and turkey fare are moderately priced, while chicken cuisine is the cheapest recipe. I signed up for all four recipes so we’ll get a clear overview of the price.

Nom Nom charged me $229.46 for Copper and Skye’s meals before the 50% sign-up discount. That works out at $57.35 per week for both of my Klee Kai or $8.19 a day.

So Nom Nom is $75.56 more expensive than The Farmer’s Dog per month – or that’s a saving of $906.72 over the course of a year of feeding fresh dog food recipes.

Nom Nom Vs The Farmer’s Dog: Who Offers The Best Fresh Dog Food?

If you’re ready to try fresh dog foods, the price will be one of the big factors when trying to decide between different fresh dog food brands. However, there are some other considerations that may impact your ultimate decision.

Nom Nom and The Farmer’s Dog offer fresh food recipes – but they don’t offer any other pet food formats such as dry dog food, air dried dog food or raw dog food. So if you sign up to either of these dog food companies, you’re committing to fresh food.

These fresh food brands offer the same number and the same proteins in their recipes: you can select from a beef recipe, a chicken recipe, a pork recipe and a turkey recipe.

Having tested The Farmer’s Dog Vs Nom Nom on my Alaskan Klee Kai, there was a clear winner. Copper and Skye preferred The Farmer’s Dog over Nom Nom.

The Farmer’s Dog (Photo: Life With Klee Kai)

The Farmer’s Dog use human grade ingredients in their pre portioned meals, which are formulated by board certified veterinary nutritionists and exceed the standards set out by the American Feed Control Officials.

All these factors made me feel goo about The Farmer’s Dog and their dog food. Copper is a food motivated dog so he didn’t require a lot of encouragement to eat his own dog food. Skye liked all the recipes, although her favorite was the beef recipe.

When I opened up the box (the dry ice kept the food cold), I was impressed to see The Farmer’s Dog individually labelled Copper and Skye’s fresh food meals. This wasn’t the case with Nom Nom, who didn’t write which meal packets were for Copper and Skye.

I really appreciated that The Farmer’s Dog’s packaging has a handy pre portioned guide on the front of each meal pouch, which wasn’t the case with Nom Nom’s meals.

It felt good knowing that The Farmer’s Dog wanted to ensure Copper and Skye ate meals containing human grade ingredients tailored to their weight goals.

Neither of these fresh food brands provided a food storage container, which would have been a thoughtful inclusion to prevent mess in the fridge when we had leftover dog food.
