Are you thinking about making the switch to a fresh dog food delivery service – but you can’t decide between Maev’s raw dog food or The Farmer’s Dog frozen dog food meals?
Well, I’ve bought, tested and reviewed these two fresh dog food delivery brands to provide our Life With Klee Kai community and readers the chance to learn more about key differences between these two pet food options.
The Farmer’s Dog have established themselves as one of the leading suppliers of fresh pet food, having created a range of frozen meals that are balanced, complete, use human grade ingredients and tailored to meet your dog’s specific needs.
Maev, on the other hand, have created raw dog food that makes switching your dog onto a raw diet extremely convenient and hassle-free, unlike some raw feeding diets that require lots of freezer space and careful handling of raw meat.
I invested my money in The Farmer’s Dog and Maev to learn about the differences between their pet food, examining the recipes on offer, the ingredients used, how their dog food is made and provide our verdict.
CUT TO THE CHASE: We recommend Maev dog food and you can save 20% on your first order via this link when you use code “KLEEKAI20”.
Maev Raw Dog Food
Maev offer a range of raw dog food to cater to pet parents who are ready to ditch traditional kibble or wet food in favour of a fresher approach to their dog’s diet.
You can feel confident feeding Maev’s raw food to your dog because it’s been created by veterinarians, uses USDA lean proteins and human-grade ingredients and tailored to meet your dog’s needs.
Maev dog food is 100% USDA-certified, vet-formulated, AAFCO-compliant, contains high quality ingredients, made in the USA and adheres to world-class food safety standards.
You can clearly see the natural ingredients in Maev’s recipes – such as chunks of lean meat, vegetables like green beans and fruits like blueberries. It allows pet owners to feel good about the healthy raw food.
Maev offer a beef recipe and a chicken recipe – or you can go for variety pack. The dog food delivery service formulate your dog’s meals based upon their requirements.
So you can get Weight & Digestion, Anxiety & Calming, Skin & Coat and Hip & Joint formulations to start your pup on their raw diet.
Maev recommend serving their raw food frozen because it can help remove plaque built up on your pup’s teeth as well as slow down rapid eaters like my dog Copper.
Maev don’t just offer raw food meals – there’s more to their dog food delivery service. You can purchase Maev’s bone broth or their supplement bars to supplement your dog’s diet.
If you’d like to invest in a Maev bundle, you can purchase their raw food, bone broth and supplement bars in the same order to give all their products a try.
Our Verdict On Maev Dog Food
Having previously tried raw food in the UK with mixed results, I was interested to see how Copper and Skye would react to Maev’s raw meals.
I decided to invest in Maev’s raw food after reading some of the positive reviews of their dog food delivery service online.
Seeing as Skye can be a picky eater, I was intrigued to see if she would enjoy raw food over fresh frozen meals or customized kibble.
I liked that Maev use USDA-approved lean meat in recipes that can be formulated to target specific health conditions affecting your dog.
As Copper and Skye suffer with separation anxiety, I decided to go for the Anxiety & Calming formula.
To my great surprise, Copper and Skye didn’t hesitate to get stuck into Maev’s raw food. It was evident their fresh dog food was a hit with my Alaskan Klee Kai by the clean bowls.
Copper usually wolfs down his meals but he took his time with Maev, grabbing a mouthful and going to his bed to slowly chew the frozen cubes before returning for another portion.
Skye showed a lot of mealtime excitement which nearly never happens with any dog food brand.
I noticed that Copper and Skye had smaller, firmer stools and shinier coats after switching to Maev, while they remained food motivated since first feeding Maev a few months ago.
Maev is competitively priced – I pay $152 every month for Copper and Skye’s meals. In my experience paying for fresh dog food, I feel Maev are priced at the lower-to-mid range.
The Farmer’s Dog
The Farmer’s Dog are one of the best dog food delivery providers in the USA.
Their dog food delivery service offers a range of different recipes that have been created by vets, can be tailored to meet each dog’s specific needs, pre-portioned for pets and shipped to your door.
The Farmer’s Dog only use human grade ingredients in the recipes such as USDA-approved meat, healthy fruit and vegetables as well as superfoods.
Compared to some fresh dog food delivery services, you can clearly see the natural ingredients in your dog’s meal pouches with splashes of green and orange.
By filling out The Farmer’s Dog questionnaire, you’ll be providing the dog food delivery service the chance to tailor their recipes to meet your pet’s needs whether you’ve got a senior dog or puppy.
The Farmer’s Dog offer a beef recipe, chicken recipe, pork recipe and turkey recipe. While they’ll suggest a protein source based upon your answers, you can still override their recommendations.
They use pre-portioned packaging with a handy guide on the front of the meal pouch to indicate exactly how much pet parents should feed their dogs – so you don’t overfeed or underfeed.
Once you’ve defrosted your dog food, you can simply cut open the ready to serve meals and pour into your dog’s bowls or feeding mat.
Our Verdict On The Farmer’s Dog
If you’ve been following Life With Klee Kai for some time, you’ll know that we typically like to feed fresh dog food meals to Copper and Skye.
When we landed back in the USA after five years in the UK, The Farmer’s Dog appeared to be one of the best dog food delivery options so we gave them a try.
I was impressed with how The Farmer’s Dog cook their meals at low temperature to lock in the nutritional goodness and maximum flavour.
We found The Farmer’s Dog sign-up questionnaire pretty easy to use when compared to some dog food subscriptions that can be awkward to navigate.
The Farmer’s Dog have veterinary nutritionists who have helped to formulate their meals and we decided to opt with their suggest meal plan for Copper and Skye.
My Alaskan Klee Kai’s meals arrived still frozen in the box and I really liked that The Farmer’s Dog labelled Copper and Skye’s respective meals. In my experience, not all dog food delivery services do this.
They had different meal plans because Copper needs to shed a few pounds but Skye needs to gain a little weight because she’s a fussy eater. So I really liked that The Farmer’s Dog clearly labelled their individual meals and suggested meal portions.
With regards to price, The Farmer’s dog is extremely competively priced when compared to other fresh food brands for dogs.
I paid $153 to receive Copper and Skye’s meals every 40 days – a bigger delivery required more freezer space but reduced the cost to $5.12 a day when compared to $6.55 a day when receiving meals every 14 days.
Maev Vs The Farmer’s Dog: Who Do We Recommend?
We’ve reached the key part of our comparison article – do we recommend Maev or The Farmer’s Dog?
Well, it’s a difficult choice but based upon Copper and Skye’s enthusiasm for their food, I’d recommend Maev’s raw food for dogs.
I was massively surprised by how much my Klee Kai loved their raw food seeing as they’ve had a lukewarm reaction when I tried to feed raw in the past.
But Copper and Skye showed genuine mealtime excitement when the Maev bag came out of the freezer – Copper was talking and demanding his dinner, Skye was doing pirouettes in eagerness to get her food.
I can’t emphasize how unusual this type of behaviour is for Skye – she’s usually fussy and passive.
So Maev came out on top when testing these two dog food delivery services on my Klee Kai.
But from a pet owner’s perspective, I don’t think you’ll go wrong with either Maev or The Farmer’s Dog. It comes down to whether you plan to feed raw or a fresh food diet.
Maev and The Farmer’s Dog have both been formulated by veterinary nutritionists, use human grade fresh food, provide tailored recipes, offer dog food delivery and are competitively priced.
As you can see, when it came to paying for Maev and The Farmer’s Dog dog food, there was a dollar difference. So there’s nothing in it.
While our pick would be Maev and I’ve continued to feed raw based upon my success with their dog food, you won’t go wrong with The Farmer’s Dog either.

Anything Else To Consider?
When looking at the best dog food delivery in the USA, we started our research by reading up about the different pet food formats and which dog food companies had the best reputations.
We came up with a shortlist for the best dog food delivery options and started to purchase the dog food ourselves so we could see the fresh food firsthand and gauge Copper and Skye’s reaction.
Typically, we prefer to feed fresh dog food meals but we were intrigued by the prospect of a raw food diet based upon the stellar reviews of Maev.
We found that Maev and The Farmer’s Dog provided a lot of great information on how to make the successful transition to their high quality food to bolster your dog’s health.
We’ve also spoken to the customer service teams of both dog food companies and they can help offer advice or guidance as well as answer any questions.
We’ve reached the end of our comparison article taking a look at Maev and The Farmer’s Dog.
Based upon my experience feeding their dog food to Copper and Skye, I’d recommend Maev. My Alaskan Klee Kai were obsessed wuth their raw meat meals, bone broth and supplement bars.
I really liked that Maev offer different formulations to cater to the different needs of dog parents, while they’ve got a wellness element with the bone broth and supplement bars.
Having said that, Copper and Skye did enjoy The Farmer’s Dog and it’s clear their dog food is one of the best on offer in the fresh frozen meals marketplace.
But I’ve seldom seen such mealtime excitement from Skye and Copper than when feeding Maev.
From my perspective, I really liked how Maev pet food offers the chance to feed raw in an easy way – there’s no need to handle raw meat or get containers out to store it.
Maev dog food doesn’t need to be thawed so you can simply serve direct to your dog and allow them to enjoy all the benefits of a raw food, human grade diet.
