Is The Farmer’s Dog More Expensive Or Cheaper Than Ollie?

In my experience ordering from The Farmer’s Dog and Ollie, it’s clear that The Farmer’s Dog is cheaper than Ollie despite Ollie offering a versatile range of dog food – fresh dog food and baked food.

The Farmer’s Dog offers four fresh food recipes – beef recipe, chicken recipe, pork recipe and turkey recipe. You can only order fresh dog food from The Farmer’s Dog, they don’t offer any dry food.

Alternatively, Ollie dog food comes in two formats – fresh and baked. Ollie allow dog parents to pick between a full fresh meal plan, a mixed meal plan and a half fresh meal plan.

As you might expect, Ollie’s fresh dog food is the most expensive, followed by the mixed plan, while the half fresh plan is the cheapest option but you’re only getting a half portion of fresh food for your dog.

Although Ollie offer more options to dog owners, Ollie proved more expensive than The Farmer’s Dog when comparing all their different meal plans to The Farmer’s Dog recipes. It was resounding.

So if you’re criteria for deciding between Ollie and The Farmer’s Dog comes down solely to price, The Farmer’s Dog is the more affordable option for pet owners who want to feed fresh food to their pup.

But to highlight the difference in price between Ollie and The Farmer’s Dog, I’m going to share exactly what I paid for The Farmer’s Dog meals and Ollie’s food packs and baked food.

The Farmer’s Dog Vs Ollie: Our Price

To get started with our Ollie and The Farmer’s Dog price comparison, I’m going to share what I paid when I ordered from these two fresh dog food delivery companies in the spirit of transparency.

Copper is a six-year old Alaskan Klee Kai who is neutered, weighs 12lbs and needs to lose a little weight, currently eats a fresh food diet, is relatively active every day and doesn’t get many treats. Skye is a six-year old Alaskan Klee Kai who is spayed, weighs 10lbs and needs to gain a little weight, is a picky eater, is relatively active and gets a moderate amount of treats throughout the day.

When we signed up to The Farmer’s Dog, we paid $2.74 per day ($19.18 per week) for Skye’s meals and $2.39 per day ($16.73 per week) for Copper’s meals. Our 30-day price with The Farmer’s Dog was $153.90, but we opted for deliveries every 40 days so we were charged $205.20 every 40 days for their fresh food recipes.

Let’s take a look at our Ollie price. Based upon the same details, we were quoted $3.92 per day ($27.45 per week) for Skye’s Ollie food packs and we had to pay the same for Copper’s meals, $3.92 per day ($27.45 per week). Our 30-day monthly price for both Alaskan Klee Kai dogs was $219.60 (although Ollie delivered our fresh dog food every eight weeks and charged us every eight weeks).

When it came to feeding our Alaskan Klee Kai dogs, The Farmer’s Dog worked out $2.71 cheaper per day, $18.99 cheaper per week and $65.70 cheaper per month. Just in case you were wondering, we would save $788.40 a year by feeding The Farmer’s Dog human grade food rather than Ollie’s fresh food diet.

Ollie did offer a mixed plan combining their baked food and fresh dog food – that would have reduced the weekly price to $47.96 from $54.90. Yet, Ollie’s dog food still came in more expensive than The Farmer’s Dog despite opting for their mixed plan. The Farmer’s Dog only cost $35.91 per week to feed to Copper and Skye.

Ollie dog food offer a half fresh plan to further reduce the price if you’ve got a limited budget and you’re happy to mix fresh food from Ollie with your dog’s current food. If we downgraded Copper and Skye to their half fresh plan, the weekly price for each dog was $38.44 per month, which is still $2.53 more expensive than The Farmer’s Dog.

The Farmer’s Dog Vs Ollie: Who Offers The Best Fresh Pet Food?

If you care about the price but it’s not the only factor when deciding between Ollie and The Farmer’s Dog, let’s take a closer look at these two fresh dog food brands.

While Ollie do offer a more thorough service with fresh food and baked food to cater to dogs who prefer a mixture of textures in their dog bowl, my Alaskan Klee Kai preferred The Farmer’s Dog. I found that Copper and Skye would typically finish The Farmer’s Dog meals but I’d find that Skye would have some remaining food in her bowl when I gave her Ollie.

Both Ollie and The Farmer’s Dog offer a good range of fresh food recipes to cater to picky eaters like Skye, but my Alaskan Klee Kai preferred the latter’s pet food.

Ollie and The Farmer’s Dog both customized their fresh dog food to meet my Klee Kai’s needs, with their recipes formulated by veterinary nutritionists to meet the American feed control officials standards.

But when I opened my first boxes from Ollie and The Farmer’s Dog, one dog food brand stood out.

The Farmer’s Dog labelled Copper and Skye’s individual meals – which was really important because I had share in both sign-up questionnaires that Copper needed to lose weight and Skye needed to gain weight.

It showed that The Farmer’s Dog had listened and they help dog parents to ensure the right dog is eating the right customized fresh food if you do have multiple pets with different weight goals and different health issues.

You can see from the price breakdown above, I paid a little less for Copper’s meals which highlighted that The Farmer’s Dog were offering slightly smaller portions for my overweight Alaskan Klee Kai compared to his sister. Ollie, on the other hand, charged me the same for both dogs.

The Farmer’s Dog packaging had a handy pre-portion guideline on the front so I knew exactly how much of their dog food to feed at mealtime. The Farmer’s Dog offers a truly pre-portioned dog food service, which wasn’t the case with Ollie who just provided a feeding guideline. Ollie’s packaging didn’t offer anything comparable to this.

While The Farmer’s Dog came out on top with regards to price, taste (according to my dogs), labelling and packaging, Ollie did trump The Farmer’s Dog when it came to including a meal container and a scooper. A thoughtful inclusion to make feed fresh less messy for pet owners.

Of course, you’ll need freezer space to store your dog’s meals whether you go for The Farmer’s Dog or Ollie. However, you’ll often have leftover food or remaining food in the meal packet, so the meal container will come in handy to separate dog foods from human food in the fridge.

Overall, my recommendation would be The Farmer’s Dog based upon my experience.
