The Farmer’s Dog offer fresh dog food using human grade ingredients in customized recipes to give dog owners the chance to embrace making a change to their dog’s current food.
They use high quality meat, fresh produce and other natural ingredients to create a range of healthy dog food recipes to promote an active and healthy lifestyle.
The Farmer’s Dog offers four recipes – beef, chicken, pork and turkey. They’ve been cooked at low temperatures before being frozen and shipped to your door.
I felt good knowing that The Farmer’s Dog has been formulated by board certified veterinary nutritionist.
The Farmer’s Dog offer fresh dog food that is tailored to meet your pup’s specific needs based upon the answers that pet owners give in the sign-up questionnaire.
When you receive The Farmer’s Dog fresh food meals, you’ll notice that your dog’s meals are labelled with their name (great if you’ve got two dogs like me).
The Farmer’s Dog use a graphic on their meal packets to explain exactly how much fresh dog food to feed your canine companion every day.
My Experience Feeding The Farmer’s Dog
I consider The Farmer’s Dog to be one of the leading fresh dog food subscriptions in the USA.
Having researched their fresh food, I decided to give The Farmer’s Dog a try to see if they lived up to the hype.
I really liked The Farmer’s Dog’s questionnaire, which was easy to follow, beautifully designed and thorough in the questions.
Once I filled out Copper and Skye’s details, I liked that The Farmer’s Dog offered deliveries every 14 days or every 40 days.
By selecting the latter, I made a significant monthly saving of nearly $50.
When I received my first box from The Farmer’s Dog, I was impressed to see the meals were frozen despite the delivery being left outside my gate for a couple of hours.
I liked that The Farmer’s Dog provide a booklet with lots of information and a cooler to make me feel like part of their community.
Skye and Copper really enjoyed The Farmer’s Dog with a lot of mealtime excitement and empty bowls.
With fussy Alaskan Klee Kai, I felt like The Farmer’s Dog delivered on human grade ingredients in tasty recipes to keep my dogs food motivated at mealtime.
Feeding The Farmer’s Dog to Copper and Skye cost me $5.12 a day, which I felt represented excellent value.
Who Are Spot & Tango?
Spot & Tango are another fresh dog food delivery company who create recipes using human grade ingredients responsibly sourced.
They offer two dog food subscription services – fresh frozen dog meals and dry dog food called UnKibble. For the purposes of this comparison article, we’ll be focusing on Spot & Tango’s fresh meals.
Spot & Tango use a limited ingredient in their fresh recipes without any additives, nasties or preservatives.
At the time of writing, Spot & Tango have three fresh food recipes – Turkey and Quinoa, Beef and Millet and Lamb and Brown rice.
You’ll need to fill out Spot & Tango’s questionnaire to help the dog food company get to know your dog, their needs and any health issues or food allergies.
Once you’ve completed all the questions, Spot & Tango will suggest a fresh food meal plan for your canine companion.
Spot & Tango will ship your dog’s food direct to your door and you can store their fresh recipes in the fridge and the freezer.
My Experience Feeding Spot & Tango
Spot & Tango were one of the first brands that I tried when we moved back to California and I started my search to find the best fresh food diet for Copper and Skye.
I liked that Spot & Tango use limited ingredient recipes, including human grade food such as brown rice, sweet potato, USDA beef and other high quality meat.
Spot & Tango’s labels were easy to use so I could clearly see all the natural ingredients in their dog food.
When I received my Spot & Tango delivery, I was disappointed to see that Copper and Skye’s meals weren’t individually labelled despite having different needs.
There was no pre-portioned element to their dog food subsription service despite the fact that I filled out their sign-up questionnaire.
I should point out that Spot & Tango offer a customized scooper with their UnKibble dry food but it would have been good to have some sort of pre portioned element to their fresh food – too.
Instead, I had to refer to Spot & Tango’s feeding guidelines and use kitchen utensils at mealtime.
I noted that Spot & Tango’s fresh food did have some vibrant colors but looked quite dense and dry.
With regard to taste, Copper and Skye can be picky dogs with food sensitivities so I was intrigued to see how my Alaskan Klee Kai would enjoy their Spot & Tango meals.
I found that my Klee Kai weren’t as excited as they’d usually be with fresh dog foods.
Copper is more food motivated by Skye is the fussier of my picky eaters and she didn’t consistently finish her Spot & Tango meals.
I should point out UnKibble was more of a hit than their fresh meals with my Alaskan Klee Kai.
The Farmer’s Dog Vs Spot & Tango: Our Verdict
We’ve reached the key part of our comparison article – do we recommend The Farmer’s Dog or Spot & Tango?
Well, you’ve probably guessed that I would recommend The Farmer’s Dog to anyone looking to ditch dry food or wet food in favour of fresh food meals for their pup.
I really like The Farmer’s Dog sign-up process, the recipes they’ve got on offer and their price.
The Farmer’s Dog cost me $5.12 a day or $153.60 per month to feed Skye and Copper, while Spot & Tango set me back $7.59 a day or $227.92 a month.
The Farmer’s Dog is $2.47 cheaper per day or $74.34 a day.
While I made a saving feeding The Farmer’s Dog, I didn’t have to compromise on food quality.
In fact, Copper and Skye clearly preferred The Farmer’s Dog to Spot & Tango when it came to taste, flavour and texture.
I really liked that The Farmer’s Dog offered a pre-portioned element to their dog food with a useful graphic to follow on each meal pouch.
They provided dedicated dog food packets for Copper and Skye to ensure my Klee Kai were eating appropriately portioned meals.
While you won’t go wrong with Spot & Tango, I felt that The Farmer’s Dog wins comfortably.
