If you don’t want to take a deep dive into each dog food brand and just want to hear our recommendation, I’ll cut right to the chase. I’d recommend The Farmer’s Dog.
I really like The Farmer’s Dog sign-up process, the recipes they’ve got on offer, and their price.
The Farmer’s Dog cost me $4.18 a day or $251.04 per month to feed Skye and Copper, while Spot & Tango set me back $5.01 a day or $300.48 a month. The Farmer’s Dog is $0.73 cheaper per day or $49.44 a month.
While I made a saving feeding The Farmer’s Dog, I didn’t have to compromise on food quality. In fact, Copper and Skye clearly preferred The Farmer’s Dog to Spot & Tango when it came to taste, flavor, and texture.
I really liked that The Farmer’s Dog offered a pre-portioned element to their dog food with a useful graphic to follow on each meal pouch, which helped me stick to each of my Klee Kai’s weight goals. Copper needs to lose some weight, while Skye needs to gain some weight.
They provided dedicated dog food packets for Copper and Skye to ensure my Klee Kai are eating appropriately portioned meals. The Farmer’s Dog is the only fresh dog food company that I’ve reviewed where Copper and Skye received individually labeled meals. It’s truly tailored!
While you won’t go wrong with Spot & Tango, I felt that The Farmer’s Dog is the better option for my dogs and met my needs as a pet owner.
The Farmer’s Dog
The Farmer’s Dog makes fresh dog food using human-grade ingredients in customized recipes to give dog owners the chance to make a change to their dog’s current food.
The Farmer’s Dog offers four recipes: beef, chicken, pork and turkey. It’s a respectable recipe variety, but some dog owners may prefer more options to keep picky eaters guessing at mealtime.
The Farmer’s Dog tailors their meals to meet your pup’s specific needs based on the answers that pet owners give in the sign-up questionnaire.
When you receive The Farmer’s Dog fresh food meals, you’ll notice that your dog’s meals are labeled with their name (great if you’ve got two dogs like me).
The Farmer’s Dog uses a graphic on their meal packets to explain exactly how much fresh dog food to feed your canine companion every day.
Once I filled out Copper and Skye’s details, I liked that The Farmer’s Dog offered deliveries every 14 days or every 40 days. By selecting the latter, I made a monthly saving of nearly $50.
When I received my first box from The Farmer’s Dog, I was impressed to see the meals were frozen despite the delivery being left outside my gate for a couple of hours.
Skye and Copper really enjoyed The Farmer’s Dog with a lot of mealtime excitement and empty bowls. My Klee Kai particularly enjoyed the beef and chicken recipes, but the turkey recipe was their least favorite.
Feeding The Farmer’s Dog to Copper and Skye cost me $8.36 a day, which I felt represented excellent value.

Spot & Tango
Spot & Tango is a fresh dog food delivery company that creates recipes using human-grade ingredients responsibly sourced.
They offer two dog food subscription services – fresh frozen dog meals and dry dog food called UnKibble. For the purposes of this comparison article, we’ll be focusing on Spot & Tango’s fresh meals.
Spot & Tango use limited-ingredient recipes without any additives, nasties, or preservatives. At the time of writing, Spot & Tango has three fresh food recipes – Turkey and Quinoa, Beef and Millet and Lamb and Brown rice.
You’ll need to fill out Spot & Tango’s questionnaire to help the dog food company get to know your dog, their needs, and any health issues or food allergies. Once you’ve completed all the questions, Spot & Tango will suggest a fresh food meal plan for your canine companion.
Spot & Tango was one of the first brands that I tried when we moved back to California, and I started my search to find the best fresh food diet for Copper and Skye.
I liked that Spot & Tango’s labels were easy to use, so I could clearly see all the natural ingredients in their dog food.
When I received my Spot & Tango delivery, I was disappointed to see that Copper and Skye’s meals weren’t individually labeled despite having different needs. There was no pre-portioned element to their dog food subscription service despite the fact that I filled out their sign-up questionnaire.
I should point out that Spot & Tango offers a customized scooper with their UnKibble dry food, but it would have been good to have some sort of pre-portioned element to their fresh food, too. Instead, I had to refer to Spot & Tango’s feeding guidelines and use kitchen utensils at mealtime.
I noted that Spot & Tango’s fresh food had vibrant colors but looked quite dense and dry. I was intrigued to see how my Alaskan Klee Kai would enjoy their Spot & Tango meals.
I found that they weren’t as excited as they’d usually be with fresh dog foods. Skye is the fussier of my picky eaters, and she didn’t consistently finish her Spot & Tango meals.
(I should point out UnKibble was more of a hit than their fresh meals with my Alaskan Klee Kai).

The biggest differences between The Farmer’s Dog and Spot & Tango are the level of customization and the price. The Farmer’s Dog was cheaper and tailored their meals to meet my Alaskan Klee Kai’s specific weight goals.
The Farmer’s Dog is better than Spot & Tango in my experience because it offers greater customization and personalization, along with a pre-portioning guideline. I felt their dog food service represented better value.
My picky eater Skye preferred The Farmer’s Dog over Spot & Tango. I’d recommend starting with The Farmer’s Dog before trying Spot & Tango if you’ve got a fussy eater like me.
