The Pets Table Pros And Cons: My Honest Review

Are you thinking about signing up for The Pets Table, but you want to know the pros and cons of their dog food subscription before buying?

I’ll be sharing my insights into The Pets Table based on my experience ordering from this relatively new dog food brand, the brainchild of the popular meal service provider HelloFresh.

I first ordered from The Pets Table when they launched in 2023, but I’ve placed subsequent orders every year since to stay updated on their recipe offerings.

The Pets Table is a versatile dog food company that offers fresh and air-dried dog food, provides pre-portioned guidelines, and provides a seamless sign-up experience.

However, they provide a premium service at a premium price, so it’s more expensive than traditional dog food. We had a mixed experience feeding it to our Alaskan Klee Kai.

In this article, I’ll be sharing my pros and cons after testing their air-dried dog food and fresh dog food on my fussy Alaskan Klee Kai dogs Copper and Skye.

The Pets Table: Pros

Two pet food formats

The Pets Table offers two different pet food formats: fresh dog food and air-dried dog food. 

I consider this a great feature because it caters to pet owners who may prefer dry dog food over fresh-frozen meals, which can take up freezer space. 

Alternatively, you can combine air-dried and fresh to keep fussy eaters satisfied with different textures. This approach worked well with Skye and Copper.

Recipe range

At the time of writing, The Pets Table offers three fresh food recipes and two air-dried recipes. That’s a total of five recipes. 

If you’ve got a fussy eater like my female Klee Kai dog Skye, then you’ll appreciate a varied range. 

They’ve got beef stew with carrots, chicken casserole with green beans, and turkey casserole with broccoli in their fresh range. You can choose between beef and berries or chicken and sweet potato for their air-dried food.

Copper and Skye were particular fans of the beef stew and carrots in the fresh range.

Four different plans

From a dog owner’s perspective, I liked that The Pets Table give pet parents four options when selecting a meal plan. 

You can choose between full-fresh, air-dried, mixed, or half-fresh. So they cater to different budgets and preferences.

I believe this is a really user-friendly way of operation their subscription plan as a dog owner who is conscious of budget.

It suited me because Copper and Skye love air dried and fresh dog food. They could enjoy the best of both worlds.

Affordable (sort of)

The Pets Table is affordable – provided you order the air-dried food. 

For instance, my price to feed Copper and Skye their air-dried dog food was $193.20 a month or $6.44 a day.

That’s still more expensive than Sundays For Dogs, who charged me $184 a month. UnKibble is even cheaper at $164.40 a month.

If I opted for a mixed plan, the price would be $8.40 a day or $252 a month.

I don’t consider that too bad, given that other brands such as Ollie charges $220 for its dog food subscription.

The Pets Table Cons

Hit and miss with Klee Kai

The Pets Table was hit-and-miss with my Alaskan Klee Kai dogs. 

Copper is more food motivated, so he ate most of his meals throughout the month testing their food.

However, Skye is fussy, and she didn’t really like their fresh food range. 

She’d frequently leave half her food and by the end of the month, she refused it completely. 

However, both my Klee Kai dogs liked their air-dried food.

Portion guidelines could work better

While it was commendable that The Pets Table attempted to place portion guidelines on each fresh frozen meal pouch, they were entirely ineffective.

The lines weren’t spaced properly, and the meal pouch was so skinny that it made it impossible to follow the guide. I’ve only seen The Farmer’s Dog do this well, so it’s a pity.

Fresh plan is expensive

You can find some affordable options if you’re looking to sign up for The Pets Table, but their fresh plan is pricey. 

I had to pay $9.12 a day or $273.60 a month for the fresh plan. That’s significantly more expensive than The Farmer’s Dog. 

Even if I opted for their “half fresh plan”, my monthly cost would be $182.40.

However, it’s about on par with Nom Nom and Ollie. I paid $219.60 for Ollie.

Is The Pets Table Worth It?

It’s comes down to cost and my Klee Kai’s preferences. 

The Pets Table provide an efficient and versatile service to cater to pet owners irrespective of their dog’s preferences.

You can order air dried, mixed plan, fresh plan or half fresh plan. I appreciated having so many options.

However, it’s expensive. It’s one of the more expensive dog food brands that I’ve reviewed. 

As I highlighted above, their air-dried dog food is more expensive than Sundays and UnKibble.

Their fresh food costs more than The Farmer’s Dog and Ollie. 

Skye didn’t enjoy The Pets Table’s fresh food meals. Copper liked their range.

Overall, it’s hard for me to say it’s worth it based on Skye’s reaction. But she’s a fussy dog.

How We Tested The Pets Table

We took time to test The Pets Table over the course of a couple of months.

I started by placing an order of their fresh dog food to test on Copper and Skye.

I was intrigued to see how the pre-portioned element would work on their meal pouches.

Once we finished, I switched to air dried to ensure I could write a well-rounded review.

Copper and Skye were much happier eating their air-dried food, overall.

I’ve placed subsequent orders to keep this article updated but ultimately didn’t stick with them.

Who Is The Pets Table Best For (and Who Should Skip It)

I can recognise that fresh dog food isn’t for everyone. Some pet owners may prefer to avoid fresh food or view it as an unnecessary hassle. Alternatively, some dogs may prefer other pet food formats.

Best for:

• Dogs like Copper who love fresh food and air dried
• Pet owners who love to have choice
• Dog parents who need flexibility on pricing
• Easy sign-up process

Not ideal for:

• Medium and large breeds because of price
• Pet owners with multiple pets
• Super picky eaters like Skye
• Owners who don’t like subscription plans

How Does The Pets Table Compare to Other Brands?

A Day in the Life Feeding The Pets Table

The average day feeding The Pets Table to Copper and Skye depended on whether I was signed up to their air dried or fresh plan.

It’s easy to feed air dried. You open the bag, take out a scoop, pour into your dog’s bowl, and reseal the bag.

Unfortunately The Pets Table don’t provide a custom scooper unlike another brand I reviewed, UnKibble.

Their fresh dog food required a little more foresight on my part. I had to defrost a meal pouch the night before.

As I mentioned above, their portion guidelines on the side of the pouch are difficult to follow.

It involved guesswork on my part. The pouches are very skinny and the fresh food isn’t compact. 

I found it quite messy to deal with. But The Pets Table did provide a meal container so I could pop the leftover food in there to avoid mess in the fridge.

My Conclusion

We’ve reached the end of my article looking at the pros and cons of The Pets Table’s dog food subscription service.

If I were to sign up for The Pets Table, I’d consider their air-dried food, which Copper and Skye liked, while I felt it was affordable compared to other similar services like Sundays.

However, I’d give their fresh meals a pass because my Klee Kai dogs weren’t fans, and I didn’t like the portion guide. I felt it was overpriced when compared to The Farmer’s Dog.
