If you’re looking to embrace freeze-dried dog food for your pup, Tally’s Ranch could be a good option for you.
They’ve created a range of freeze-dried recipes to cater to pet owners who want a convenient way to quality dog food.
My female Alaskan Klee Kai dog, called Skye, is a fussy eater, and we’re always on the lookout for dog food that might be a good fit for her.

We were intrigued by Tally’s Ranch because their website states that their recipes “provide the nutrition of raw food and the convenience of kibble”.
In this review, I’m going to share my pros and cons of Tally’s Ranch based on my experience feeding it to my Klee Kai dogs over the past month.
Tally’s Ranch Pros
Convenient

The biggest pro when it comes to Tally’s Ranch is the convenience. If you’ve been following our channels and website for some time, you’ll know that we’ve been feeding raw food to Copper and Skye. It’s been going great. As I mentioned in the introduction, Tally’s Ranch’s dog food has some of the nutritional qualities raw dog food has without the hassle. You don’t have to worry about defrosting raw food, where to store it in your fridge or freezer, or the mess left behind. Instead, you open the bag, use the scooper, and reseal. With a hectic family life to consider, this type of convenience without sacrificing quality is great.
No fillers or additives
Skye has always been a picky eater with a sensitive tummy. So Yasmin and I have always paid attention to the ingredients in recipes that we feed her. It’s important to us that she’s eating gently-cooked food, made from high-quality ingredients, and without any nasties. Tally’s Ranch doesn’t use any additives or fillers in its recipes. Their veterinary team has formulated their recipes using USDA meats and human-grade vegetables, ensuring Copper and Skye are eating a balanced and complete diet.
High meat content
When I spent time researching Tally’s Ranch, I delved into their beef and chicken recipes to see the ingredients in each. I was encouraged to see their recipes contain 70% meat, with the rest made up of vegetables, oils and vitamins. The meat content was high compared to most of the dog food brands that I’ve reviewed. Tally’s Ranch claims on its website that it’s the only pet food company in the USA to publish the percentage of meat in their recipes. It felt good to know Copper and Skye were eating dry food that contained ample protein.
Copper and Skye approved

So, how did my Alaskan Klee Kai dogs rate Tally’s Ranch? We’re currently feeding a raw dog food brand and using dry food as a topper and training treats throughout the day. I switched my regular dry food option for Tally’s Ranch freeze-dried food over the course of the month. It was a success. Copper and Skye were happy to munch on Tally’s Ranch. I would consider making the permanent switch to Tally’s Ranch from the air-dried dog food we’re currently using.
Cheaper than raw or frozen
If, like me, you’ve been feeding fresh frozen meals or raw dog food, you’ll know how expensive these pet food formats can be. They’re pricey, especially when you have two dogs or more! Tally’s Ranch cost me $171.60 per month for Copper and Skye. That’s less than The Farmer’s Dog, Nom Nom, and Ollie. It’s worth noting that Tally’s Ranch send an initial first box containing 16 days of food (with a 50% discount if you sign up using the button in this article) but your second box will contain 66 days worth of food.
Tally’s Ranch Cons
Costs more than kibble

While Tally’s Ranch does cost less than fresh dog food and raw dog food, you can expext to pay more for their freeze-dried food than you would for regular kibble. Having said that, you’re enjoying higher quality pet food as part of a subscription service. So you’re paying more for a premium service rather than picking up traditional dog food at your local pet store or supermarket that may have confusing labels, additivies and fillers.
No custom scooper
Tally’s Ranch provide a scooper with your first order (or two scoopers if you’ve got two dogs like me). They’re beautiful gold scoopers that Yasmin loved because they fit the aesthetic of our kitchen. Having said that, they didn’t appear to be customized scoopers, so you will need to follow Tally’s Ranch feeding guidelines to make sure you’re getting the portions right.
Only two recipes (for now)

At the time of writing, Tally’s Ranch offer two recipes (beef and chicken). That’s not a lot of recipe variety. Copper and Skye enjoyed eating their beef and chicken recipes. Skye is a fussy eater, and I love having a variety of recipes to alternate the protein source she’s eating. I’d love to see more recipes on their menu in the future as Tally’s Ranch become further established.
Wrapping Up

So there we have it! I’ve shared my Tally’s Ranch review, highlighing my pros and cons of their freeze-dried dog food.
I would recommend Tally’s Ranch to dog owners who want to enjoy the convenience of dry food but ensure their dog is eating a diet that’s gentle on their digestive system.
Copper and Skye enjoyed eating their two recipes that had a high-meat content, while I felt they delivered a good dog food subscription service from a pet owner’s perspective.
