Open Farm Vs Tally’s Ranch: What’s The Difference?

Open Farm vs Tally's Ranch What's The Difference

Last Updated on June 24, 2025 by Kieran Beckles

Freeze-dried raw dog food has become increasingly popular in the past few years, but which brand should you go for if you’re ready to give it a try: Open Farm or Tally’s Ranch?

Open Farm is a well-established dog food brand in the USA thanks to its exhaustive range of pet food formats. They offer dry food, fresh food, air–dried and freeze-dried options.

Tally’s Ranch, on the other hand, is a new pet food company who are focused on one type of dog food – freeze-dried raw.

It can be confusing to figure out the best dog food for your pet, considering the sheer number of options available to dog parents in the USA at the current time.

With a picky eater in my house, I’m always on the lookout for new dog food options to keep my fussy Alaskan Klee Kai excited about mealtime.

In this article, we’ll compare Open Farm and Tally’s Ranch to help other dog food owners decide on a preferred option for freeze-dried raw dog food.

I’ll cut to the chase if you want to know my verdict before reading further. I’d recommend Tally’s Ranch based on my Klee Kai’s preference and greater personalization.

If you’re a long-term reader of our website, you’ll know Copper and Skye enjoy raw dog food, so I was intrigued to see how they’d react to freeze-dried raw food.

Copper and Skye consistently finished their Tally’s Ranch portions, whether I fed them beef or chicken during our trial with the new dog food brand.

From a dog owner’s perspective, Tally’s Ranch offered great customization when compared to Open Farm. This appealed to me because I like a tailored subscription plan.

When it comes down to price, Tally’s Ranch was slightly cheaper than Open Farm, too. However, Open Farm has a more diverse range if you’re looking to pair freeze-dried raw food with another pet food format.

Who Are Tally’s Ranch?

Tally’s Ranch launched their freeze-dried range at the start of 2025 after their founder Michael left The Farmer’s Dog to begin his venture. As a business owner, I enjoyed reading about another’s entrepreneurial endeavour.

They only use USDA meat and human-grade ingredients in their beef and chicken recipes. You can feel good knowing that your pet is eating food formulated by veterinarians.

I was impressed to learn Tally’s Ranch is the only US-based dog food company to share the actual percentage of meat in their recipes (it’s 70%!).

If you’re accustomed to dog food subscription plans, you’ll have a seamless experience signing up for Tally’s Ranch, with key questions about your pet and their preferences.

Copper and Skye took to Tally’s Ranch quickly. They consistently finished their freeze-dried raw meals, despite Skye typically being fussy with any new dog food.

Tally’s Ranch isn’t as cheap as some dry food brands, such as Sundays and UnKibble, but I still believe they’re competitively priced at $170.60 for a month’s supply of food.

Who Are Open Farm?

Open Farm is a popular dog food company that offers ethical and sustainable pet food services in the US. For this comparison article, we’ll be taking a look at their freeze-dried food.

They’ve got some diverse options within the freeze–dried range: morsels, patties, rawmix and good bowl. Within each range, they’ve got multiple recipes to cater to fussy dogs like Skye.

Open Farm is a superior option if you care about variety to keep your picky eater guessing at mealtime. They outperform Tally’s Ranch in this area.

However, they lack some of the customization of Tally’s Ranch. While you can sign up for a subscription, it feels less catered to each dog.

You can select 3.5oz, 13.5oz and 22oz bags – and you’ll need to follow their feeding guidelines to ensure you get the portions right.

Open Farm costs more each month – $227.96 – because I had to buy four bags to ensure I had enough to feed Copper and Skye.

Open Farm is a great option if you’ve already tried Tally’s Ranch and you want something new.
