  • Best raw (and overall) alternative: We Feed Raw
  • Best fresh + dry alternative: The Pets Table
  • Best premium alternative: The Golden Child

Have you been feeding your dog JustFoodForDogs but you want to make a change to a different pet food format or subscription plan? I’ve singled out six alternatives to consider having tested these options with my Alaskan Klee Kai, including my picky eater Skye.

Quick verdict

If you’re looking for the closest alternative to JustFoodForDogs at an affordable price, I’d recommend The Farmer’s Dog. They offer fresh dog food recipes with greater customization and personalization than JustFoodForDogs, and at a more affordable price. However, my personal favorite is We Feed Raw because their frozen raw and freeze-dried food transformed Skye from a picky eater to a food-motivated dog. For dog owners who care most about price, UnKibble strikes a balance between ingredients, customization, convenience and cost.

I’ve tested over 30 different dog food brands with my Alaskan Klee Kai dogs in the search for something that my fussy eater Skye will consistently eat after years of headaches.

We’ve personally reviewed some of the leading brands across different pet food formats, including JustFoodForDogs. In fact, I first reviewed their fresh dog food back in 2019.

They offer a great range of recipes to cater to picky dogs like Skye, while they’ve got health-specific formulations if your dog has an ongoing concern that you’re looking to support.

While my dogs did enjoy their food, I felt my subscription experience lacked the customization of some of their competitors, while the price was a little steep compared to other companies.

In this JustFoodForDogs comparison review, I’ll share some options across fresh, air-dried, raw, freeze-dried, and dry dog food, while sharing budget and premium options.

Best Fresh Alternative: The Farmer’s Dog

The Farmer’s Dog offers fresh dog food in the form of four recipes that you can get grain-inclusive and grain-free. At the current time, you can choose between beef, chicken, pork and turkey. They gently cook their vet-formulated food before shipping it frozen. You will need to make space in your fridge and freezer. I’ve tested it every year since 2023 and it remains one of my Alaskan Klee Kai dogs’ favorite fresh dog food options.

Key points Do you want to know the pros and cons of The Farmer’s Dog before…

How does The Farmer’s Dog compare to JustFoodForDogs?

The Farmer’s Dog doesn’t offer the same variety of recipes or dog food formats as JustFoodForDogs, but they excel in other ways. You get better customization, personalization, portioning and overall convenience. The Farmer’s Dog costs $251 for Copper and Skye, which works out $61 cheaper every month when compared to my JustFoodForDogs price.

Best Raw Alternative: We Feed Raw

We Feed Raw is my top recommendation if you have a picky dog like Skye. You have the choice between frozen raw or freeze-dried raw, or you can feed both like me. They’ve got five proteins on offer within their frozen raw range. Their food completely changed Skye’s eating habit. She’s no longer fussy at mealtime and consistently enjoys eating her raw food.

If you have a picky eater who will eat their new dog food for a couple…

How does We Feed Raw compare to JustFoodForDogs?

We Feed Raw has frozen raw and freeze-dried raw food, something which JustFoodForDogs don’t offer as part of their range. So if you’re switching from JustFoodForDogs and you’re ready to give raw feeding a try for the first time, We Feed Raw is a great choice. My subscription costs less than JustFoodForDogs at $280/month (frozen raw) and $202/month (freeze dried). We’ve had two years of consistent success feeding it to Skye.

Best Air-Dried Alternative: Sundays for Dogs

Sundays for Dogs offers a range of air-dried recipes for dogs who love a high-meat content, treat-like texture and tend to prefer dry food over fresh or raw. Sundays has three recipes: beef, chicken and turkey. They don’t include a custom scooper but their food is shelf-stable. We ordered their food for the first time in 2023 and stuck with it for almost a year before switching to raw feeding. It’s my top pick for dog owners who want to switch to air-dried.

The Pets Table have five fresh recipes, four air-dried recipes and two EasyFresh options. The Pets Table has plenty of choice when it comes to formats and recipes, although not quite as many as JustFoodForDogs. Where The Pets Table does a better job is with a customized subscription plan and a more affordable price. All of their formats come in cheaper than JustFoodForDogs, with their EasyFresh and air-dried plans priced around $190 for my dogs, and their fresh plan costing me around $275.

Best Affordable Alternative: UnKibble

UnKibble uses a proprietary low-temperature cooking and dehydration method called FreshDry to create their dry dog food. While that might sound like marketing speak, it’s basically dry dog food with the benefits of fresh. Their recipes are vet formulated and I appreciate the ingredient transparency with clear labeling on the front of every bag. They’ve got three recipes, with beef proving the most popular with my Alaskan Klee Kai.

UnKibble is much cheaper at $164 per month, compared to JustFoodForDogs ($312).

Best Premium Fresh Alternative: Golden Child

Skye and Golden Child
Skye and Golden Child

Golden Child is a relatively new player in the fresh dog food space but I’ve included them because Skye and Copper loved their recipes (beef and chicken). It looked more like stir-fry than dog food. They include functional drizzles (beef, chicken and peanut butter flavors) to add even more flavor and more health benefits. I was impressed by their sign-up questionnaire, which was one of the most thorough I’ve encountered.

How does Golden Child compare to JustFoodForDogs?

Golden Child offers two fresh dog food mains and three drizzles. While JustFoodForDogs have a much bigger range of dry and fresh dog food, they don’t provide functional drizzles. Copper and Skye preferred eating Golden Child over JustFoodForDog’s recipes, but their food was more expensive. I paid $348 for Golden Child, although you can get a trial box for $75.
