 If you have a picky dog stuck in the cycle of eating for a few weeks, then suddenly refusing food and ending up at the vet, We Feed Raw was the first food that actually broke that pattern for us.

She’d eat for a few weeks. Then stop. Then she’d start vomiting bile because her stomach was empty. We’d have to book a last-minute appointment at the vet, get prescribed anti-nausea medicine, switch her food, and the cycle would be reset.
Even when we found a fresh dog food brand she liked, we’d still have days when she just didn’t fancy it, and we’d have to take her to the vet.
It was exhausting, stressful and expensive. We lived this cycle for five years.
However, we tried We Feed Raw around 18 months ago, and it triggered a huge transformation in Skye. She went from a picky eater to food motivated dog.
Skye hasn’t refused it once. She eats it every single mealtime.
In this article, I’m going to share five reasons why we plan to stick with We Feed Raw, highlighting some of the benefits we experienced.
The Cycle That Made Me Switch (If You Know, You Know)
I want to share the cycle that Yasmin and I were stuck in before getting into the benefits we’ve experienced since making the switch to We Feed Raw.
We brought Skye home in 2017, and she was particular about her dog food from the start. We fed the kibble our breeder recommended, but she wouldn’t eat it consistently.
This is when the cycle began. We’d switch to another kibble brand, and Skye would eat it for a couple of weeks before suddenly refusing her dry dog food.
She’d start baying and refusing to lie down on her tummy out of discomfort. She’d vomit yellow bile because there was nothing in her stomach.
We’d take her to the vet (or the emergency vet), and they’d give us anti-nausea medicine, tell us to cook her some chicken and rice, or give us some prescription dog food.
Everything would go back to normal for a month or two, and then we’d repeat the cycle.
Towards the end of 2018, we met a Samoyed owner at a Bay Area dog park, and she recommended trying fresh dog food.
We kept that in mind when we moved to the UK and fed fresh dog food between 2019 and 2023. It worked better than kibble, but about twice a year she’d repeat the cycle.
We returned to the US in 2023 and started searching for new food for our Klee Kai.
We found that air-dried dog food worked for a while, but we were stuck in the loop.
It was extremely stressful, upsetting and expensive!

What Happened When I Switched to We Feed Raw
We discovered We Feed Raw in 2024 and decided to give it a try because we had tested out raw dog food when we lived in the UK, and our Klee Kai loved it.
We couldn’t believe how quickly Skye transformed from a fussy eater into a food-motivated Alaskan Klee Kai dog once we got our first box.
Skye started behaving in ways I’ve never seen her act before.
She’d stalk me to the kitchen when it was around mealtime to see if I was going to prepare her meals.
Skye would jump and push my legs when I took too long to get her food ready, such was her eagerness to eat.
She wouldn’t let Copper near her bowl. She’d finish all her food, lick her bowl clean, and then let her brother investigate to see if any raw food was left.
These were all behaviors out of character for my fussy Alaskan Klee Kai dog, so I knew something was different about this new food.
With a year and a half of experience with them, Skye hasn’t refused their food once, and we’ve noticed five clear benefits that mean we’ll never switch back.

My Picky Dog Became Food-Motivated
Skye has undergone a complete transformation from an extremely picky eater to food motivated dog.
It’s incredible to see how excited she gets about her raw dog food and she hasn’t once rejected We Feed Raw.
We’ve even used their freeze-dried raw food and experienced the same success.

Whether it’s a table topper on top of the raw food or being fed freeze-dried raw while they’re at our pet sitter, Skye finishes her food every time.
No More Bile Vomiting or Emergency Vet Visits
Skye hasn’t vomited bile since we switched from air-dried food to raw.
How does We Feed Raw compare to Sundays?

Because she consistently finishes her portions, she’s got a full tummy and her digestive system has been singing.
We no longer have to make last-minute appointments at the vet or go to the emergency vet late at night.
This alone has made it worth the cost.
Smaller, More Regular Stools (and Less Gas)
One of the unexpected benefits of switching to We Feed Raw has been smaller stools.
I didn’t anticipate this benefit, but I’m extremely grateful as the dog owner responsible for cleaning up after our Klee Kai.
Their stools have become much smaller, firmer and consistent in size and shape. They’ve got a regular schedule and pass a stool once a day around the same time most days.
Copper did struggle with some flatulence when we fed fresh dog food, but he hasn’t experienced that issue with We Feed Raw – thankfully.
Better Weight Balance (One Gained, One Lost)
We’ve had followers point out Copper’s weight gain when we were living in the UK and feeding fresh dog food.
It was a problem and something our vet raised with us when we returned to California three years ago.
However, Copper has dropped from 19lbs to 15lbs after we switched to them. His weight is being managed.
Skye has also put on some weight, which the vet wanted because her ribs were showing slightly too much.
More Energy, Shinier Coat, Less Tear Staining
Another surprise benefit has been healthier coats.
We’ve received compliments from family and friends about how healthy and shiny Copper and Skye’s coat is looking.
Alaskan Klee Kai can struggle with tear stains, and it’s another ailment our social media audience has pointed out to us.
However, we’ve noticed that Copper and Skye’s tear stains have improved.
Copper struggles with anal glands, and while We Feed Raw hasn’t cleared this up entirely, it’s less frequent than when we fed fresh dog food.
I’m Not the Only One — Other Klee Kai Owners Saw the Same Results
We’ve shared our positive experience with We Feed Raw online and received messages from other Alaskan Klee Kai owners about it.
Pickiness seems to be relatively common within the Alaskan Klee Kai breed.
So we’ve recommended it to a few Klee Kai owners, and they’ve reported similar success with feeding their meals.
So, at this stage, it isn’t a coincidence that their raw food can help picky dogs.
Why I Think Raw Worked When Fresh Food Didn’t
There are a few reasons I think We Feed Raw was a success when comparing fresh and raw dog food.
Their recipes have a higher meat content than most fresh dog food brands. I’m almost certain this played a part.

Did my Klee Kai prefer We Feed Raw or Ollie?
I reviewed both of these brands in this article.
We Feed Raw offers more protein than fresh dog food. Their five raw recipes include beef, chicken, turkey, duck and lamb, and two freeze-dried raw recipes are beef and chicken.
They offer frozen and freeze-dried raw options, and being able to feed different textures in the same dog bowl provides an interesting sensory experience for our Klee Kai dogs.
How Much We’ve Saved on Vet Bills
We used to spend so much on vet bills because of Skye’s pickiness and digestive issues.
As I mentioned earlier in this article, we were stuck in a pattern where Skye would eventually refuse her food, and we’d have to go to the vet.
Typically, we’d end up spending around $200 at the vet to have Skye checked out and prescribed anti-nausea medication and prescription dog food.
If it were an out-of-hours visit to the emergency vet, the cost would easily be $400- $ 500 per visit.
So there was the obvious cost of visiting the vet and the hidden cost of being stressed out for our beloved female Klee Kai and her health.
Is We Feed Raw Worth It for Picky Dogs?
We pay $280 a month for Copper and Skye’s frozen raw food. That works out at $4.66 a day per dog to feed We Feed Raw to our Klee Kai.
To my mind, it’s worth the investment. Their food costs less than a cup of coffee at my local coffee franchise every day.
At this price, I have peace of mind knowing my Klee Kai loves their raw food. Skye consistently finishes her food.
I may be forgoing my daily cup of joe at the coffee shop, but I’m also saving hundreds if not thousands, in vet bills.
Skye doesn’t suffer from any nausea or digestive problems anymore. We haven’t been once since we made the switch.
When I look at the big picture, I do believe they’re saving me money that would otherwise go on vet costs.
As I mentioned earlier in this article, we occasionally use freeze-dried raw food.
It’s much cheaper at $202.50 per month, or $3.37 per dog per day.

Final Verdict (Would I Switch Back?)
I will not be switching back to air-dried dog food or fresh dog food from We Feed Raw.
We’re so grateful to them for the peace of mind their raw dog food has provided us since we made the switch over 18 months ago.
Skye is a happy, healthy and content Alaskan Klee Kai dog on their food, whether it’s frozen raw or freeze-dried.
My only regret is that we didn’t make the switch sooner.
