Are you ready to ditch regular pet food in favour of a fresh approach but you can’t decide between We Feed Raw and The Farmer’s Dog?
It can be a difficult trying to find the best fresh dog food or raw dog food for your pet seeing as there’s no shortage of brands purporting to offer human grade, customized, pre-portioned dog food at an affordable price.
Since returning to the US from the UK in 2023, we’ve been on a mission to find the best fresh dog food for Copper and Skye because our Alaskan Klee Kai are picky eaters with temperamental digestive systems.
It’s been a long search and we’ve tried a lot of fresh food brands but we eventually settled on a number of leading candidates, including some fresh dog food brands and a couple of raw dog food companies who provided human grade dog food that Copper and Skye loved.
In this article, we’re going to take a look at two of the top contenders: We Feed Raw and The Farmer’s Dog.
We’ll explain how We Feed Raw and The Farmer’s Dog works, what recipes they’ve got on offer, how much you can expect to pay for their human grade dog food delivery service and give our verdict on the best dog food.

Who Is We Feed Raw?
We Feed Raw is a raw dog food company who have been providing American pet parents the chance to adopt a raw diet for their furry friend since 2008.
Naturally, We Feed Raw have continuously developed their raw food since launching their business, having established themselves as one of the leading raw dog food brands in the USA.
We Feed Raw have created balanced and complete meals that are formulated by PhD nutritionist, only using USDA-sourced human grade meats alongside other human grade ingredients.
We Feed Raw don’t use any fillers, preservatives, mystery fillers, artificial colors or flavors, while the raw dog food brand use clear labels to avoid any confusion.
As you might expect from a dog food delivery company, We Feed Raw require dog parents to complete a sign-up questionnaire to allow the pet brand to create a tailored raw food diet for your dog.
You can opt to stick with We Feed Raw’s suggested meal plan (which I recommend if feeding raw for the first time), or you can decide which meals you want to include in your dog’s raw food diet.
At the time of writing, We Feed Raw have six different proteins – beef recipe, chicken recipe, lamb recipe, pork recipe, turkey recipe and venison recipe. That’s perfect for picky eaters.
You can decide the frequency of your raw dog food deliveries which will have a slight impact on price, before completing the sign-up process and awaiting your raw meals to arrive.
We Feed Raw use free cold shipping and once you get your hands on your raw recipes, you don’t have to handle raw meat before We Feed Raw store their raw food in convenient meal pouches.
To get started with feeding raw, you just need to defrost a couple of meal packets and keep the rest in your freezer to ensure they remain frozen. It’s that simple!
Our We Feed Raw Verdict
However, we had to start afresh when we arrived in the USA and we decided to make a radical decision – to try feeding raw dog food for the first time.
While we initially found another raw dog food brand, we ended up switching to We Feed Raw. It’s been a success.
To our surprise, Skye is completely obsessed with her raw meals unlike anything we’ve seen before. She’s usually fussy with her dog food, especially dry food or wet food.
While she likes fresh food, we’ve never seen such mealtime excitement as with We Feed Raw. She comes to the fridge, follows me around the kitchen until her food is on the floor. Our female Klee Kai vacuums it up so I’ve even had to buy a slow feeder to stop her wolfing it down!
Copper is food motivated so I wasn’t surprised to see our male Alaskan Klee Kai enjoy We Feed Raw – but even his reaction was noticeably even more excited for mealtime than usual.
While I haven’t had to vary their meals due to their current excitement, I like that We Feed Raw offer six raw food recipes to allow dog owners with picky eaters to vary their furry friend’s raw meals.
I found the sign-up process easy and I was pleasantly surprised by the price – we pay less than $200 per month for multiple dogs. It works out at exactly $99.76 per month for Copper and Skye’s respective raw diet.
Although we don’t usually feed raw dog food, I found the process pretty seamless. I like how We Feed Raw use meal pouches which are easy to cut open and serve direct into my Alaskan Klee Kai’s dog food bowls.
There’s minimal mess and I use a container to store any leftover raw food (it would be a nice touch if We Feed Raw provide a meal container to help subscribers but that might be something they introduce in the future).
Who Is The Farmer’s Dog?
The Farmer’s Dog are one of the leading dog food companies in the USA, and we’ve seen lots of pet owners feeding The Farmer’s Dog on social media. It was a no-brainer to give their food a try.
As we touched upon above, we fed Butternut Box in the UK. We felt like The Farmer’s Dog was the American equivalent so we signed to receive their fresh food meals.
The Farmer’s Dog only use high quality ingredients such as USDA-approved meat alongside fresh produce such as fruit and vegetables to create custom meals of high nutritional value.
They gently cook their meals to lock in all the benefits of the human grade ingredients, while the recipes are formulated by veterinary nutritionists.
To get started, The Farmer’s Dog will require pet owners to complete a questionnaire where they ask questions about your dog such as age, breed and weight, quiz you about your pet’s health and learn your desired weight for your pup.
The Farmer’s Dog offers four recipes – beef, chicken, pork and chicken. The Farmer’s Dog food is stored in convenient meal pouches that display how much to feed in your dog’s diet.
Compared to some fresh dog food delivery companies, it’s great that The Farmer’s Dog display on the front of their meal packets exactly how much to feed at each mealtime to follow their meal plans.
Once you’ve settled on a meal plan and a subscription price that works for you, you eagerly await your first dog food delivery.
The Farmer’s Dog food is shipped in box with ice to keep them frozen before you’ll need to store the majority in your freezer and a couple defrosted meals in your fridge.
Our The Farmer’s Dog Verdict
We’ve seen so lots of pet parents promoting The Farmer’s Dog on our social media feed so we decided to give the popular dog food delivery company a try to see how Copper and Skye liked their meals.
I was impressed with the easy-to-read and transparent labels on the front of the meal pouches – I could clearly read natural ingredients such as organ meat, bone broth, chicken, beef, turkey, green beans and fish oil.
You can also The Farmer’s Dog nutrient blend that includes supplemental ingredients such as vitamin e supplement, calcium carbonate, folic acid, riboflavin supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, and more.
Once I settled on Copper and Skye’s meals thanks to their easy-on-the-eye quiz, my Alaskan Klee Kai’s pet food arrived in a few days along with their respective meal plans to follow.
What I really liked about The Farmer’s Dog is the pre-portioned element of their service. Having taken the time to complete their questionnaire, The Farmer’s Dog gave a convenient feeding guide graphic displayed on the front of each meal packet.
They labelled Copper and Skye’s respective meals to ensure the right Klee Kai got the right food. A small touch but something often omitted by other fresh dog food companies.
Copper and Skye had a lukewarm reaction to The Farmer’s Dog. Copper happily ate it but Skye was a little fussy. She liked beef and pork recipes but wasn’t keen on the chicken and turkey recipes.
While The Farmer’s Dog was a little hit and miss with my fussy eater, I was impressed overall.
The Farmer’s Dog are competitively priced – I paid $5.12 a day (or $204.80 every 40 days).
We Feed Raw Or The Farmer’s Dog: Our Verdict
We’ve reached the key part of our We Feed Raw and The Farmer’s Dog comparison article.
While I like both pet food options, I’d recommend We Feed Raw over The Farmer’s Dog based upon my experience feeding their respective dog food meals to my Alaskan Klee Kai’s diet.
I’ve never seen Skye show such enthusiasm for dog food until we started to feed our pets this raw diet.
Frankly, I was astounded and delighted to see Skye not only finish, but lick her bowl clean at mealtime. Copper tends to be more food motivated but he loved We Feed Raw.
So it was a resounding success from the point of view of testing their raw food on my Klee Kai.
From a dog owner’s perspective, I’d consider We Feed Raw the most convenient raw food company that I’ve tried.
Unlike previous raw food that’s arrived in huge portions in meal containers, We Feed Raw use meal packets to make it easy to adopt this new pet food format if you’re new to raw diets.
We Feed Raw’s pet food is stored in square meal packets that are easy to stack in your freezer. It’s a small point but makes a big difference if you’re maximizing space in your freezer like me.
We Feed Raw is competitively priced when compared to other raw dog food companies and fresh dog food companies. For example, they’re slightly cheaper than The Farmer’s Dog per month.
If you’re ready to ditch processed kibble in favour of fresh food to sustain life quality for your dog, The Farmer’s Dog is a great option and I believe their food contains great nutrition.
But in my home and amongst my dogs, We Feed Raw was the clear winner.
In fact, I’m currently paying for We Feed Raw alongside a sprinkling of this air dried dog food brand as a tasty topper to provide Copper and Skye with a balanced and complete diet.

Anything Else To Consider?
If you’re worried about your dog’s weight or you want to promote a healthy life, we believe either of these dog food brands can help.
However, we recommend speaking to your veternarian before you decide to make a change to your dog’s nutrition and introduce a new food for them to eat.
You can ask your vet about any questions you may have related to ingredients in your dog’s food, such as fish oil, ground beef, supplement blends like The Farmer’s Dog use or what type of food is right for your pet’s stage of life.
It’s worth noting that handling raw meat comes with risks considering harmful bacteria sometimes found in raw food.
Having fed We Feed Raw for a few months, I don’t find myself handling raw meat because of their convenient meal packets that I can cut open and serve direct into Copper and Skye’s bowls.
We’ve reached the end of our comparison article looking at We Feed Raw and The Farmer’s Dog.
I’d recommend We Feed Raw based upon the success I’ve had feeding their raw food to my dogs.
We’ve continued to pay for We Feed Raw seeing as Copper and Skye love it and we’ve seen the benefits to our pets of feeding raw alongside an air dried brand.
