Spot & Tango Pros And Cons: My Honest Review

Last Updated on January 7, 2025 by Kieran Beckles

Are you ready to sign up for Spot and Tango, but you’re unsure whether their fresh dog food is worth the cost?

Spot and Tango is one of the leading names in the fresh dog food market, alongside The Farmer’s Dog, Ollie and Nom Nom.

I’ve been ordering fresh dog food to review for my website and YouTube channel since returning to the USA from the UK over two years ago.

In this article, I’m going to share my Spot and Tango pros and cons based on my experience feeding their fresh dog food to Copper and Skye.

If you’ve already decided to sign up for Spot and Tango or this piece convinces you, you can save 50% with discount code “LifeK50”.

Spot & Tango Pros

Simple (human-grade) ingredients

I always look to see whether a brand is using human-grade ingredients before ordering from a fresh dog food company. So I was pleased to see Spot & Tango only use human-grade meat, fruit and vegetables. It felt good knowing Copper and Skye were eating high-quality ingredients.

Transparent labeling

This ties into my previous point but Spot & Tango’s packaging is perhaps the clearest and most transparent of any dog food brand that I’ve reviewed. I love that they proudly display their recipes on the front of each meal pouch. You can see the ingredients that have gone into your dog’s food at each mealtime. It’s ingredients that you’ll recognize too. Spot and Tango don’t use any nasties or fillers.

Custom meal plans

Spot & Tango offers a custom meal plan, which is great. Now, most dog food subscription companies provide this service, but not every brand. Spot & Tango ask pet owners to complete their sign-up questionnaire. This allows the brand to tailor your dog’s food and create a portion guideline. If you’re going to pay extra for a dog food subscription, you’re within your right to expect some customization.

Rip-and-serve packaging

This might be a surprise pro but it’s a feature I don’t underestimate the value of. I appreciate being able to rip and serve Spot and Tango’s meal pouches. Some of Spot & Tango’s competitors have meal pouches but I need to use scissors to open them. It’s a pain having to find the scissors, which might be in the sink or the dishwasher, while trying to keep the dog food away from an enthusiastic toddler who wants to feed Copper and Skye!

50% discount on first box

I’ve got some good news for readers of Life With Klee Kai or viewers of our social medial channels. We can offer our fans a 50% discount off their first box of Spot & Tango when you use the discount code “LifeK50” and hit the button below.

Spot & Tango Cons

Pricey

Spot & Tango offers a premium dog food subscription service, which isn’t cheap. Spot & Tango are competitively priced compared to some of their competitors, like Ollie, Nom Nom and The Pets Table. However, The Farmer’s Dog is much cheaper than Spot & Tango.

Only three fresh recipes

As a pet owner with fussy dogs, I like to see lots of different recipes when I prepare to sign up for a dog food delivery company. Spot & Tango only offer three recipes, which isn’t a lot. I’d love to see some more variety introduced in the coming years. For instance, Ollie have five fresh recipes, which is a great range.

Skye and Copper preferred another fresh brand

My Alaskan Klee Kai dogs initially enjoyed eating Spot & Tango’s fresh meals. However, Skye started to return to her picky ways after a few weeks. I wasn’t entirely surprised. I’m not a pet nutritionist but it appeared to me that Spot & Tango’s food was a little drier than some other brands I’ve reviewed. I believe that played a part in Skye’s fussiness.

Can’t combine fresh and UnKibble

Spot & Tango introduced their dry dog food a few years ago. It’s called UnKibble – and my Klee Kai surprisingly enjoyed their dry food a lot. Unfortunately, you can’t combine Spot & Tango’s fresh meals and UnKibble as part of the same subscription plan. This is a shame.

No pre-portion guideline

I find it peculiar that some dog food brands offer custom meal plans but don’t store their meals in pre-portioned packaging. This would eliminate the brainwork when it comes to mealtime. Spot & Tango’s meal pouches aren’t pre-portioned so pet owners do need to refer to the portion guidelines to make sure they’re not overfeeding or underfeeding their dogs.

Wrapping Up

We’ve reached the end of my article on pros and cons of Spot & Tango’s fresh dog food.

There’s a lot to like about their fresh dog food but we ultimately didn’t stick with it because of the lack of recipes and Skye’s fussiness.

You may find your dog loves Spot & Tango, and they’ve got a good reputation with pet owners in the US.

While I don’t think you’ll go wrong with the brand, there are some other options that I’d be more inclined to try ahead of Spot & Tango.
