The Farmer’s Dog is one of the leading fresh dog food companies in the USA who have been helping dog owners with a picky eater.
At the time of writing, The Farmer’s Dog offers four fresh dog food recipes, including beef, chicken, pork and turkey. So there’s good variety there!
The Farmer’s Dog food uses human-grade ingredients in its fresh food recipes, including USDA-approved meat. Some human food in the recipes includes green beans, sweet potatoes, fish oil and more!

Skye is a picky eater and Copper struggles with food allergies so I prefer signing up to a dog food delivery company that will tailor its fresh food recipes accordingly.
Of all the fresh dog food brands that I’ve reviewed, The Farmer’s Dog follows through on the customized and pre-portioned element of their dog food delivery service.
When I got my hands on the dog food, I was pleasantly surprised to see The Farmer’s Dog had labelled Copper and Skye’s meals. This indicated to me that they took my Klee Kai’s weight goals seriously.
While you do need to adapt to dealing with frozen food and making space in the freezer, The Farmer’s Dog makes the transition from dry food or canned food to fresh dog food simple.
Copper and Skye enjoyed The Farmer’s Dog immensely! They finished their recipes without hesitation, which speaks to the flavor and formulation of their fresh dog food.

Pet Plate is another fresh dog food delivery company in the USA who have been providing healthy food.
If you’re a fan of Shark Tank, you may have heard of Pet Plate before because the brand was featured on the popular TV show in 2017.
If you’re accustomed to feeding traditional pet food, Pet Plate wants to transition to fresh dog food meals as stress-free as possible.
Pet Plate offers fresh cooked entrees, baked entrees, supplements, and treats. For the purposes of this article, we’re looking at their fresh cooked and baked entrees.
Their website explains that Pet Plate’s dog food uses human-grade ingredients and is designed by veterinary nutritionists, like most dog food delivery services.
Pet Plate offers Beef, Chicken, Lamb, Pork, Turkey and Venison recipes in the fresh dog food format alongside beef and chicken baked entrees.
Just like The Farmer’s Dog, you’ll need to complete Pet Plate’s questionnaire to allow the brand to tailor your pet’s new food, whether you’ve got a puppy, adult, or senior dog.
Our Verdict
I regularly encounter the Pet Plate when researching the best dog food delivery services, but I didn’t place an order until a couple of months ago.
Pet Plate has a straightforward questionnaire, and I like the option to include fresh dog food and dry dog food in the same order.
When I received my first box, I was surprised to see Pet Plate use plastic meal containers to store their fresh entrees, which differs from most fresh dog food brands.
I found these more awkward to store compactly in the freezer and keep defrosted in the fridge. However, Pet Plate’s fresh-cooked meal containers are recyclable, which is a big plus!
You can combine fresh and baked to provide your dog with multiple meal textures to enjoy. If you’ve got a fussy eater like me, it’s good to have this in your arsenal.
Copper was happy to munch away on Pet Plate, but Skye showed a little more hesitation. Heating the fresh dog food in the microwavable meal containers enticed her to eat more.
The Farmer’s Dog Or Pet Plate: Who Do We Recommend?
We’ve reached the key part of our comparison article – who do we recommend?
It’s a close call but if you have a picky eater like me, I’d recommend The Farmer’s Dog because Skye enjoyed the natural flavors in the recipes.
Copper is food motivated and he happily ate both brands but Skye was the real litmus test to see which of these fresh dog food companies had the tastier meals.
From a dog owner’s perspective, I appreciated how The Farmer’s Dog personalized Copper and Skye’s meals. This made me feel their fresh food meals were designed to help each of my dogs reach their ideal weight.
Having said that, it was great to see that Pet Plate’s meal containers are recyclable and create less mess than half-opened meal pouches.
Regarding price, The Farmer’s Dog cost me $158 a month to feed Copper and Skye, while I paid $171 to feed my Klee Kai on the Pet Plate’s combo plan. That’s a $13 difference monthly or $156 over the course of a year.
While I don’t think you’ll go wrong by signing up to Pet Plate if you want to ditch traditional pet food in favor of fresh dog food, my pick would be The Farmer’s Dog.
