Are you ready to switch to fresh dog food, but you can’t decide between The Farmer’s Dog and Nom Nom?

The Farmer's Dog vs Nom Nom Quick Verdict
The Farmer's Dog Food

The Farmer’s Dog is the better overall choice, particularly for value and palatability.

Pricing

With pricing at $251.04 per month ($4.18 per day or $3,012.48 per year) compared to Nom Nom at $291.76 per month ($4.82 per day or $3,501.12 per year), The Farmer’s Dog saves approximately $40 per month, or nearly $489 per year. More importantly, my dogs consistently preferred The Farmer’s Dog, making it the clear winner in real-world testing.

Convenience

That said, Nom Nom stands out for its convenience. Unlike The Farmer’s Dog, it is available in select retail stores, making it a practical option for pet parents who prefer to purchase fresh dog food in person rather than relying solely on home delivery.

Final Verdict:

While both brands offer premium fresh nutrition, The Farmer’s Dog wins for affordability, customization, and taste, making it the better overall value for most dog owners.

If you’re familiar with Life With Klee Kai, you’ll know that I’m a big advocate for fresh dog food, having seen the positive impact this type of diet had on my fussy Alaskan Klee Kai, especially my female dog Skye.

Having moved back to California in 2023, I’ve been on a mission to find the best fresh dog food company in the USA to ensure Copper and Skye eat the best possible diet to fuel their daily lives with my family.

In my research, I came across The Farmer’s Dog and Nom Nom, two leaders in the fresh dog food marketplace.

In this dog food review, I’ll look at Nom Nom vs The Farmer’s Dog, examining how they work, their recipes, price, and give my overall verdict.

The Farmer’s Dog Vs Nom Nom: Our Pick

The Farmer's Dog Vs Nom Nom Recommendation

If you want to know who we recommend without an in-depth dive into these two brands, we’ll cut right to the chase. My pick would be The Farmer’s Dog.

I felt good feeding The Farmer’s Dog to Copper and Skye, knowing their fresh food was made with human-grade ingredients and cooked at low temperatures.

The Farmer’s Dog packaging includes a useful guide on the front of each meal that shows exactly how much to feed Copper and Skye. I loved having this feature.

Not only that, the Farmer’s Dog labeled each of Copper and Skye’s meals, so I knew which meal packet was for which dog. It’s a small detail, but it matters a lot to me.

I was impressed with The Farmer’s Dog’s competitive pricing. They charged me $251.04 a month. I’d have to go back to 2018 to get that price with Nom Nom!

Nom Nom’s food looked great, with visible chunks of chicken and sweet potatoes. It’s clear that your dog’s diet will benefit from fresher ingredients than dry or canned dog food.

It’s worth noting that Nom Nom offers six recipes, two more than The Farmer’s Dog.

Despite the potential health benefits, I was disappointed with the lack of customization for the price, and the cost was a big shock.

While you won’t go wrong with Nom Nom if you do decide to sign up for their subscription service, I believe The Farmer’s Dog is the best choice.

Who Are The Farmer’s Dog?

If you start to research the best dog food delivery companies in the USA, you’ll quickly encounter The Farmer’s Dog. They have established themselves as one of the top brands in fresh dog food.

The Farmer’s Dog created a range of balanced, complete meals made with human-grade ingredients, tailored to our dogs’ specific needs. You won’t find any additives, brown pellets, meat meals, preservatives, or nasties in The Farmer’s Dog recipes. They don’t use any confusing labels or label tricks, either.

The Farmer’s Dog offers four meal options: beef, chicken, pork, and turkey recipes. They’re all prepared in The Farmer’s Dog’s USDA kitchens.

If you’re buying fresh dog food, you’ll usually be required to fill out a sign-up questionnaire. The Farmer’s Dog has perhaps the best questionnaire among the fresh dog food services I’ve reviewed.

Once I completed all the steps, The Farmer’s Dog recommended recipes for Copper and Skye. They took into account that Copper needs to lose a few pounds and Skye is a picky eater. So my Klee Kai’s meal plan did vary.

When I got my hands on The Farmer’s Dog, I was impressed by the welcome pack, which included a cooler bag and meal container (which they added in 2025).

I liked that The Farmer’s Dog had individually labeled Copper and Skye’s meals to highlight the customization element.

The Farmer’s Dog delivered on the pre-portioned element of their service, unlike other brands. This is important because Skye and Copper had their own meal packets with different daily portions tailored towards reaching their respective weight goals.

I liked that The Farmer’s Dog had a graphic on each meal pouch showing dog owners exactly how much to feed at each mealtime. Copper and Skye enjoyed all the recipes, and I enjoyed seeing empty bowls at the end of every mealtime! Even picky Skye was satisfied.

In terms of price, Copper and Skye’s meals would cost me $8.36 a day, which comes to $251.04 a month. This is a price increase of nearly $58 from $194.40 in 2023.

Who Are Nom Nom?

Nom Nom is another fresh dog food delivery company that has created a range of fresh meals with its board-certified veterinary nutritionists. They’ve been operating since 2014, but Mars has since acquired Nom Nom.

Nom Nom uses human-grade ingredients to create complete, balanced, fresh-food meals for dogs in the USA. Nom Nom offers six recipes – Beef Mash, Chicken Cuisine, Pork Potluck, Turkey Fare, Lamb Pilaf, and Turkey and Chicken Cookout.

You’ll have to complete Nom Nom’s questionnaire to help the dog food company tailor your dog’s food to their needs. Nom Nom will suggest a meal plan, but you can still pick your preferred protein source depending on your dog’s preferences or your budget.

As I’ve previously discussed on our website, we first encountered Nom Nom back in 2017. We had been feeding kibble to our Klee Kai, but a chance encounter with a Samoyed owner at a dog park introduced us to the world of fresh dog food and Nom Nom.

Copper and Skye enjoyed eating Nom Nom for the best part of 18 months before we moved to London and had to start the process of finding new fresh food meals for our dogs all over again.

Six years later, Nom Nom was one of the first pet food brands that we decided to try when we landed back in California as a family. Their name changed from Nom Nom Now to Nom Nom after being acquired by Mars. As pet parents, we were unsure how this would affect the quality of Nom Nom’s fresh dog food.

The consistency of the meals had changed. Nom Nom’s fresh food appeared to contain many human-grade ingredients, such as diced chicken, green beans, brown rice and sweet potatoes.

However, the meal pouches weren’t as easy to use; we never had much luck with the supposed resealable element of Nom Nom’s packaging. While they claimed to offer pre-portioned meals, we didn’t feel there was much guidance on how Nom Nom’s meals delivered on that promise.

The price increased drastically. Copper and Skye’s meals cost us $291.76 a month. That equates to $9.64 a day.

I checked my emails from five years ago, and we were paying $155 a month in August 2018. So that’s a monthly price increase of $137!
