Are you considering investing in a Fable dog crate, but want to know if it’s worth the significant investment?
I’ve been eager to review the Fable dog crate for some time, and I finally got the chance to test it out with my Alaskan Klee Kai dogs Copper and Skye.

Unlike many of the dog crates I’ve previously reviewed on our website, the Fable crate has the obvious advantage of resembling a piece of furniture more than a traditional dog crate.
While it’s a stylish dog crate, I wanted to see whether it’s fit for purpose, worth the price tag, and worthy of a recommendation to our readers based on my experience reviewing it.

In this article, we’ll examine the pros and cons of the Fable dog crate, sharing our experience with it in our home, and whether Copper and Skye liked it.

Fable Dog Crate Pros
Stylish

I’ve reviewed a variety of dog crates, including Impact, Diggs, Gunner, and others. I was intrigued to get my hands on Fable since I returned to California from the UK in 2023. I opted for the walnut finish with acrylic doors, as my home features walnut hardwood floors. The crate fit seamlessly into our interior. We kept it in our living room next to the sofa, replacing the Impact High Anxiety crate. It has a modern, sleek finish. It could almost pass for a coffee table, but for the ventilation windows. Even the squared windows could be a design feature of a unique piece of furniture, rather than a dog crate. The New York Times rated Fable’s crate as “the best furniture crate of 2025” in case you’re interested!
Quick assembly time

I wasn’t sure whether Fable ships their premium dog crate already assembled, like Impact’s Stationary Dog crate and the Revol, or if I had to assemble it, like the High Anxiety and Evolv dog crates. It came in a flat-pack box, so assembly was required. Fortunately, it was a breeze to put together. Fable provides clear instructions and the assembly time was less than 10 minutes. I was impressed by the durability of the crate after completing the process. It was quicker to assemble than the High Anxiety crate.
Functional design

Fable has designed its dog crate to be extremely easy to operate. There’s a latch to keep the door in place when your dog is relaxing inside. It’s easy to open the door, which has a garage-style door mechanism. It’s smooth to open, unlike the Revol crate, which makes a lot of noise. I noticed the difference because Copper and Skye act skittish with the Revol when I use the garage-style door. They weren’t skittish when I used Fable’s door. Fable writes on their website that the crate can serve several functions, including that of an end table. It has a nice finish that you might be happy to place alongside one of your sofas or a bedside table, if you want your dogs to sleep in your room but in a crate.
Excellent ventilation

Some dog crates have good ventilation, but can be inhibitive if you want to see your dog when they’re in the crate. Specifically, I’m thinking of the Impact crates. The Fable crate features square-shaped windows on the sides and back, while the acrylic door also has square-shaped windows. The squares are large enough that you can peer through and see your dog. The front door is transparent, so you’ll have no issues seeing how your pup is doing inside. It provides ample airflow, but it also allows in light. My dogs love having a den-like space when my toddler is being a little rambunctious. The Fable crate fit the bill.
Durable

It’s a wooden crate, which makes it more durable than some cheap, plastic dog crates you’ll find on Amazon. I believe this crate is designed to be placed in a living space within your home and not relocated. If that’s what you need it for, I reckon you’ll have a crate for the duration of your pet’s life.
Good for skittish dogs

I’ve already mentioned that my dogs liked the acyllic door mechanism, but I wanted to reiterate the potential suitability for pups who get scared by loud noises. The garage-style door operates with minimal noise compared to other crates that I’ve reviewed. The Fable dog crate is made of wood, which means your dog won’t have to experience metallic sounds when you use the crate. I’ve found that my dogs can be skittish with metal crates. I like the Impact crates because of their safety and versatility features. Using a soft dog bed can also help dull some of the sounds, but the Fable crate does offer a serene experience for your pet.
Fable Dog Crate Cons
Destructive puppies or dogs

The Fable dog crate is probably not suitable for puppies that aren’t crate-trained or for destructive dogs. It’s a crate made of wood, which makes it susceptible to big chewers. Their website explains that they don’t recommend their crate “if your dog demonstrates serious chewing/destructive tendencies, particularly with furniture”. It might be a good idea to start with a cheap Amazon crate to crate train your pup before you decide to invest in one of the most expensive crates on the market.
Expensive

The Fable dog crate is extremely expensive. Only the Impact High Anxiety crate rivals it in terms of price, among the dog crates I’ve reviewed on the website. It’s significantly cheaper if you opt for the version without the door, which starts at $599.The white gate is more affordable than the acrylic gate, allowing you to save between $100 and $200 on the door. The signature finish is cheaper than the walnut finish. The walnut finish door with acrylic door is priced at $2999 (for large), $1999 (for medium), and $1099 (for small). The signature finish with a white door is priced at $2499 (for large), $1899 (for medium), and $799 (for small). I was sent the crate in return for a review. Would I pay for it? I do love the crate, but I probably wouldn’t pay more than $1000 for a dog crate. Yasmin, on the other hand, probably would because she appreciates interior design!
Slightly small for Copper/Skye

Copper and Skye are inseparable and love to be crated together. It provides them with company and comfort. Unfortunately, the medium Fable crate was slightly too small for my Klee Kai pair. I would need to measure up to the large size if I wanted to continue to crate them together. This isn’t really a con if you don’t want to crate two dogs in a medium crate. However, I do mention it because Fable doesn’t accept returns, so it’s essential to get your measurements right.
Lacks portability

The Fable crate is a great option for your home, but it does lack the ability to be used in the car. It isn’t meant to be portable. But if you’re paying over a grand for a dog crate, you’re unlikely to invest in multiple dog crates – one for your home and one for travel. It might not be a con if you don’t require it for your car or truck, but it’s worth noting.
Wrapping Up

So there we have it! We’ve reached the end of our feature on the Fable dog crate.
I’d recommend the Fable crate if you’ve got a dog that’s already crate-trained and likes to have a safe space or den to relax in.
There’s no escaping that it’s a huge investment. The price may be off-putting for many readers.
If you don’t want to invest more than a grand on a dog crate, you might be best served going with a Diggs crate.
However, I like the wooden design, and it fits the style of our home. It does feel like an elevated dog crate in that sense compared to other models.
There are pros and cons, so ultimately it’ll come down to the budget and preference of each dog owner.
