Are you trying to decide between Sundays Food For Dogs and The Honest Kitchen but you can’t decide which dehydrated dog food brand is the best for your pup?

It can be difficult trying to decide between human grade dog food brands because there’s so much choice and it can be confusing trying to figure out which offers the best pet food.

There’s been a welcome shift towards human grade food for dogs over the past five years or so, with growing numbers of pet owners ditching kibble in favour of fresh food.

We decided to make the switch to human grade dog food in 2018 – and we haven’t looked back after seeing firsthand the positive results changing Copper and Skye’s diet.

However, we had to find new dog food for our Alaskan Klee Kai when we moved back to the USA because the pet food brand we were feeding in the UK doesn’t offer their service Stateside.

During our research into the best dog food to feed Copper and Skye, we encountered two dehydrated dog food companies – Sundays Food For Dogs and The Honest Kitchen.

Dehydrated dog food is typically created by slowly dry meals to lock in flavours and nutritional goodness before being stored in a bag or box and shipped to your door.

In this comparison article, I’m going to be taking a look at these two dehydrated dog food companies, giving our verdict and explaining how you can save some money if you decide to try either.

Sundays For Dogs

Sundays Food For Dogs launched in 2020 as they sought to provide dog owners with a more convenient way to feed human grade dog food without the hassle of dealing with frozen meals.

Although Sundays For Dogs isn’t fresh food in the sense that it’s meals that are cooked and frozen, this dehydrated dog food company still uses human grade ingredients.

They’ve crafted three human grade recipes – Beef, Chicken and Turkey – thanks to the help of professionals, such as veterinary nutritionists to ensure your dog is getting everything they need in a balanced and complete diet.

Sundays For Dogs standout for the high protein content of their human grade recipes – ther jerky-like dehydrated dog food contains 90% protein and 10% superfoods.

That’s a higher protein content than a lot of fresh dog food brands. To learn more, you can read my Sundays’ dog food review and whether it’s worth ditching the traditional kibble for their food here.

As you’d expect from a dog food company promising human grade dog food, Sundays don’t use any additives, preservatives, fillers or nasties in their dehydrated dog food.

Sundays explain on their website that the air drying method used to create their human grade dog food ensures the flavours and nutrients are locked in.

Perhaps that’s why Sundays has proven so popular with dogs in the USA, including a lot of picky eaters or dogs with food sensitivities. Just check out some customer testimonials to see how much fussy dogs love Sundays’ human grade food.

To get started with Sundays For Dogs, you’ll need to fill out their sign-up questionnaire to provide them with key details about your pet.

You can disclose whether you’ve got a dog with food allergies or on a prescription diet.

Once they know a little bit more about your dog, Sunday will offer a recommended meal plan but you still have the flexibility to select what protein source you’d like your dog to eat.

You’ll also get a quote for your subscription plan so you’ll know how much you’ll be paying on a weekly or monthly basis.

Our Verdict

Copper and Skye arrived back in California accustomed to eating frozen meals from a British dog food brand called Butternut Box.

However, they don’t offer their human grade dog food in the USA. We started to search for new pet food to keep our Klee Kai happy.

I had some experienced with air dried dog food in the UK and Sundays appealed to me because of the positive reviews online.

Having read through all the details about their dehydrated dog food, I decided to give Sundays a try.

To my pleasant surprise, Copper and Skye loved their Sundays’ dog food – the beef and chicken recipes were a particular hit.

Skye can be picky and struggles with food sensitivities but she had no issue eating Sundays For Dogs.

I even had a nibble to see whether the human grade dog food lived up to my expectations, and while it’s not necessary meant for human consumption, I can see why my dogs loved it.

I loved the convenience of feeding air dried dog food to my Klee Kai – there was no messing around with meal packets that can leave a mess in the fridge.

I didn’t have to worry about making space in the fridge or freezer for frozen meals – I could just pop the Sundays For Dogs box back in the cupboard.

Having arrived back in the USA, I have been shocked by the price of human grade dog food.

But I believe Sundays For Dogs offer a more affordable alternative to fresh food meals with the added of convenience of freeing up space in the fridge or freezer for our food.

The Honest Kitchen

When I was researching dog food in the USA, I found The Honest Kitchen as a potential contender.

They’re a well-established dog food company in the USA, having started creating human grade fog food back in 2002.

They have a range of different pet food formats – ranging from clusters dry food to dehydrated dog food, and wet food to topper.

For the purposes of this comparison article, I’ll be taking a look at their dehydrated dog food.

The Honest Kitchen’s dehydrated dog food is perhaps their most popular judging by the sheer volume of reviews on their website.

At the time of writing, they offer 19 different dehydrated dog food recipes, including wholegrain and grain-free options.

They explain online that their recipes are created using whole food ingredients, such as real meat, fruit and vegetables.

While The Honest Kitchen don’t have a sign-up questionnaire to get to know your dog on the same level as Sundays, they do have a recipe finder for pet parents to help find the right dog food for your pup.

Our Verdict

Like I mentioned earlier, I’ll be concentrating on The Honest Kitchen’s dehydrated food to cater to pet parents who are stuck between Sundays Food For Dogs and The Honest Kitchen.

I did like the range of different recipes that The Honest Kitchen offer to cater to owners who want to feed human grade dog food but want variety.

However, I did notice that their ingredients labels were quite complicated with some ingredients (mainly vitamins) that I hadn’t heard of before.

Putting that aside, Copper and Skye were relatively passive in terms of their interest in this dog food.

Copper showed more interest than Skye, which is to be expected because he’s less fussy than his Klee Kai sister. Having said that, he became less excited the longer I kept feeding The Honest Kitchen.

Skye is a picky eater and I found that she struggled with mealtime excitement with this food.

Sundays Food For Dogs Or The Honest Kitchen: Our Recommendation

We’ve reached the key part of this comparison article: which human grade dog food do we recommend?

Based upon our experience, I would go with Sundays For Dogs.

I really liked that Sundays For Dogs’ recipes had a high protein content, which isn’t often the case. You want to feel confident the dog food’s ingredients will keep your pup fuelled and happy.

Indeed, The Honest Kitchen’s dehydrated dog food had just 22.5% protein – so that’s a big disparity between these two pet food manufacturers.

While Sundays only had three recipes on offer for pet parents, it’s decent variety for fussy dogs.

Sundays offered more customization for their human grade dog food, while providing a more personable approach to their subscription service by getting to know your pet.

I preferred the packaging of Sundays For Dogs, with a resealable bag in a brightly colored box.

While I don’t think you’ll go wrong if you decide to opt for The Honest Kitchen’s dog food, my choice would be Sundays air dried food for Copper and Skye.

Anything Else To Consider?

If you’re ready to make a change to your pet’s dog food to human grade dog food, you should speak to your veterinarian before you switch it up.

It’s important to be careful when making a change to your pup’s dog food because you could risk upsetting your pet’s tummy even if you’re making the switch to human grade food.

By speaking to a vet about dog food, they can help you make the transition slowly to the new dog food.

Both of the dog food companies in this article have customer service teams who can provide added guidance on how to make the change from your pet’s old dog food to new human grade dog foods.

If you’re ready to ditch your dog’s current food whether it’s canned food, traditional kibble or wet food, I think you’re on the right track to healthy and fresh meals for you canine companion.

My pick would be Sundays For Dogs based upon all the factors discussed above.

They’re perfect for a picky eater, dogs with sensitive stomachs and dogs of all life stages.
