UnKibble vs Just Food For Dogs: What's The Difference?

Last Updated on August 22, 2024 by Kieran Beckles

Have you decided to adopt a fresh dog food diet for your dog, but you can’t decide whether to go for UnKibble or Just Food For Dogs?

There’s no shortage of fresh dog food delivery companies providing dog owners with the chance to ditch kibble or canned food in favor of a fresh food diet using human-grade ingredients.

However, it can be a little overwhelming trying to find the best fresh dog food for your dog because different dog food brands make claims about their pet food and its supposed benefits.

In this article, we’re going to take a look at two of the more experienced dog food delivery companies currently providing pet owners with fresh dog food in the USA.

Spot & Tango launched their UnKibble range to provide dry dog food in a healthy pet food format, while Just Food For Dogs offers different types of healthy dog food to cater to the unique needs of pets.

We’re going to take a close look at UnKibble and Just Food For Dogs, discuss their human-grade dog food, how their subscription plan works and give our verdict on what we consider to be the best.

UnKibble Or Just Food For Dogs: Our Recommendation

Let’s get right down to business. Do we prefer UnKibble or Just Food For Dogs? Well, I’d go for UnKibble over Just Food For Dogs.

I really like that Spot and Tango offer a customized element to their dog food delivery service, ensuring that Copper and Skye’s daily needs are met.

My Alaskan Klee Kai loves to eat fresh food, and they appeared to enjoy their high-quality dog food despite being picky eaters who sometimes refuse dry dog food.

It was convenient to use a custom scooper to pour UnKibble directly into their bowls before I could reseal the bag and put it in the cupboard.

My wife loved not having thawed fresh dog food in the fridge, and it felt great to be feeding high-quality dry food that was fresher and free from nasties, unlike some traditional kibble.

While UnKibble does cost more than traditional kibble, it’s significantly cheaper than most fresh dog food companies. It set me back $139 a month, which is more affordable than fresh dog food subscriptions.

Of all the dry dog food brands that I’ve reviewed, I’d rank UnKibble alongside this air-dried dog food as the best two.

UnKibble

UnKibble is a dry dog food created by fresh dog food delivery company Spot and Tango. UnKibble was launched by the dog food brand in 2020 to cater to pet owners who prefer to feed dry food.

UnKibble contains human-grade ingredients in limited-ingredient recipes formulated by veterinary nutritionists to ensure your dog is eating a balanced and complete diet. They clearly display all the ingredients on the front of the bag. You won’t find any artificial additives, nasties or preservatives.

Spot and Tango have created four fresh recipes – beef and barley, chicken and brown rice, cod and salmon and turkey and sweet potato.

To get started, you need to complete the UnKibble questionnaire to allow Spot and Tango to tailor your pet food to meet your dog’s specific requirements. You’ll get a suggested UnKibble meal plan before Spot and Tango will ship the dry food to your door.

UnKibble Scooper

When you open your first UnKibble delivery, you’ll find a customized scooper to use with your dog’s fresh pet food, so pet parents can practice portion control before popping the UnKibble bag back in the cupboard.

Typically, I’d try to avoid dry dog food because I’ve not had much success feeding kibble to Copper or Skye in the past. After all, they do prefer a fresh food diet.

I decided to give UnKibble a try because it’s effectively fresh dog food in a convenient dry food format that still uses human-grade ingredients.

I appreciated the ability to get custom scoopers for my Klee Kai’s healthy dog food because Copper needs to lose weight, and Skye needs to gain some pounds.

My Alaskan Klee Kai enjoyed eating UnKibble’s fresh recipes, especially the beef and barley and chicken and brown rice recipes. I wouldn’t recommend cod and salmon or turkey and sweet potato if you’ve got fussy eaters because Skye wouldn’t eat much of these two fresh recipes.

I’ve reviewed a lot of dog food delivery companies, but some don’t follow through on the customized element despite advertising the tailored aspect of their business. So I liked that Spot and Tango went to the effort of providing custom scoopers with their human grade dog food.

I loved that feeding UnKibble freed up space in my fridge and freezer, didn’t require thawing, was convenient and was less messy.

UnKibble is competitively priced when compared to other dog food brands. I had to pay cost $34.64 per week or $138.56 per month for their dog food delivery service.

Just Food For Dogs

Just Food For Dogs is a fresh dog food delivery company based in the USA. While they started as a brick-and-mortar store, they offered a fresh dog food delivery service to pet owners who wanted to try their food but didn’t live near their kitchens. Now, you can find the in local pet stores.

I’ll be taking a look at Just Food For Dogs’ human-grade fresh meals that you can find at your local pet store in the freezer section. They only use human-grade ingredients in these recipes, but if you’re buying them from your pet store, they won’t be tailored to your dog’s specific needs. That’s worth remembering.

It’s worth pointing out that Just Food For Dogs can be purchased directly from their website – too.

There are some key things to keep in mind with Just Food For Dogs. Their recipes contain what they describe as “human-edible ingredients”, don’t have preservatives, are “proven healthy,” and just need to be thawed and served to your dog.

Just Food For Dogs offers beef, chicken, fish, lamb, tofu and turkey recipes – so there’s a lot of choice if you do have a picky eater.

I popped to my local pet store to pick up some Just Food For Dogs to see if my Alaskan Klee Kai would enjoy eating their meals. I paid around $30 for three meal packets, which I felt was quite expensive, seeing as it would only last me a few days.

Of all the recipes available at the pet store, I opted for beef, chicken and lamb, seeing as these tend to be my Klee Kai’s favorite protein sources.

It was definitely a bit of a faff having to thaw their meals before using half a packet and having to store it in my fridge. I used a container to store the half-open meal pouches to avoid creating a mess in the fridge with thawed fresh food.

You can find a feeding calculator on Just Food For Dogs’ website to help guide dog owners on how much food to give at mealtime. Skye and Copper happily ate their beef recipe, but they weren’t as keen on chicken or lamb.

While Just Food For Dogs was a moderate success, I wasn’t sure whether it was worth the additional cost, seeing as it didn’t make my life easier as a pet owner.

We’ve reached the end of our dog food review, taking a look at UnKibble and Just Food For Dogs.

My recommendation would be UnKibble based on our success in feeding their dog food to our Alaskan Klee Kai.

Although we have picky eaters, Copper and Skye happily ate UnKibble dog food. I liked that UnKibble was cheaper, more convenient and less hassle to feed than fresh frozen dog food.
