Spot & Tango Pros And Cons: My Honest Review

Spot and Tango Honest Review Pros And Cons

Last Updated on January 11, 2026 by Kieran Beckles

Do you want to know the pros and cons of Spot and Tango’s dog food, and whether their subscription is worth the cost?

I’ve been ordering fresh dog food to review for my website and YouTube channel since returning to the USA from the UK in 2023.

I’ve reviewed over 30 different dog food brands since starting my website, and I wanted to try Spot and Tango to see how they compare to The Farmer’s Dog, Ollie and Nom Nom.

Spot and Tango offer several great features, including label transparency, high-quality ingredients, and rip-and-serve packaging.

However, there are some drawbacks, such as the price and a limited recipe range compared to some dog food subscription companies.

In this article, I’ll share my updated pros and cons of Spot and Tango, having placed orders of their fresh food every year to test on my Alaskan Klee Kai dogs Copper and Skye.

They also sell dry dog food called UnKibble (you can read more about it here), but I’ll focus on their fresh food range in this article.

Spot & Tango Pros

Simple (human-grade) ingredients

Spot and Tango Pros And Cons

I always check if a brand uses human-grade ingredients before ordering from a fresh dog food company.

So I was pleased to see that Spot & Tango only uses USDA high-quality meat, fruit, and vegetables.

It felt good to know Copper and Skye were eating high-quality ingredients, unlike traditional pet food that may contain additives or mystery fillers.

It’s worth noting that Spot and Tango’s website explains that their fresh recipes are developed by veterinarians and are AAFCO-compliant

This is something I always look for when reviewing dog food.

Transparent labeling on packaging

This ties into my previous point, but Spot & Tango’s packaging is perhaps the clearest and most transparent of any dog food brand that I’ve reviewed.

This includes brands such as The Farmer’s Dog, Ollie, Nom Nom and The Pets Table.

I love that they proudly display their recipes on the front of each meal pouch. You can see the ingredients that have gone into your dog’s food at each mealtime.

It’s ingredients that you’ll recognize, too. Spot and Tango don’t use any nasties or fillers.

The design is really simple. I interpreted the intentional design as a sign that Spot and Tango are truly proud of the ingredients in their recipes.

For instance, you can see the Lamb and Brown Rice recipe contains lamb, brown rice, sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, and apples.

Custom meal plans

Spot & Tango offers a custom meal plan, which is great.

Now, most dog food subscription companies offer this service, but not every brand does.

Spot & Tango ask pet owners to complete their sign-up questionnaire. This allows the brand to tailor your dog’s food and create a portion guideline.

If you’re going to pay extra for a dog food subscription, you’re within your rights to expect some customization.

Rip-and-serve packaging

This might be a surprise pro, but it’s a feature I don’t underestimate the value of.

I appreciate being able to rip and serve Spot and Tango’s meal pouches.

Some of Spot & Tango’s competitors have meal pouches, such as The Farmer’s Dog and Ollie, but I need to use scissors to open them.

It’s a pain having to find the scissors, which might be in the sink or the dishwasher, while trying to keep the dog food away from an enthusiastic toddler who wants to feed Copper and Skye!

I wish more brands would adopt this approach!

Copper happily ate Spot and Tango

Spot and Tango was a hit with my male Alaskan Klee Kai dog, Copper.

He showed a lot of excitement about their recipes at mealtimes, especially beef and lamb.

When I subsequently reordered to update this review, I tended to stick to beef because lamb was too expensive.

Copper was happy with the beef recipe, and aside from The Farmer’s Dog, it was his favorite fresh dog food recipe based on his mealtime excitement.

Spot & Tango Cons

Expensive compared to other fresh dog food brands

Spot & Tango’s fresh meals (Photo: lifewithkleekai)

Spot & Tango offers a premium dog food subscription service, which isn’t cheap.

Spot & Tango are competitively priced compared to some of their competitors, like Ollie, Nom Nom and The Pets Table

However, The Farmer’s Dog is much cheaper than Spot & Tango. The price difference had increased when I updated and retested their food in 2026.

I had to pay $300.48 a month (an increase of $80 a month) for my Klee Kai’s or $5 a day per dog. That’s almost $106 more than The Farmer’s Dog.

The Farmer’s Dog cost me $194.40 a month or $3.24 a day per dog.

Only three fresh recipes

As a pet owner with fussy dogs, I like to see a variety of recipes when I sign up with a dog food delivery company.

Spot & Tango offers only three recipes, which isn’t many. I’d love to see some more variety introduced in the coming years.

It’s worth noting that there is a significant price difference between their turkey, beef, and lamb recipes.

In my Klee Kai’s case, turkey costs $2.50 per meal, beef $2.69, and lamb the most at $3.69 per meal.

For instance, Ollie has five fresh recipes, which is a great range. Even The Farmer’s Dog has four protein sources and grain or grain-free options.

Skye and Copper preferred another fresh brand

My Alaskan Klee Kai dogs initially enjoyed eating Spot & Tango’s fresh meals.

However, Skye started to return to her picky ways after a few weeks. I wasn’t entirely surprised.

I’m not a pet nutritionist, but it appeared to me that Spot & Tango’s food was a little drier than some other brands I’ve reviewed.

I believe that played a part in Skye’s fussiness.

Of all the fresh dog food brands I’ve reviewed, this is their favorite.

Can’t combine fresh and UnKibble

Spot and Tango’s fresh food range next to UnKibble (Photo: Life With Klee Kai)

Spot & Tango introduced their dry dog food a few years ago.

It’s called UnKibble and my Klee Kai surprisingly enjoyed their dry food a lot. I would highly recommend if you’re looking for high-quality dry food.

When I first wrote this review and updated it over the years, I stated that you can’t combine Spot & Tango’s fresh meals and UnKibble under the same subscription plan.

However, Spot and Tango contacted me to let me know that it is possible to work directly with their customer care team to set up a new UnKibble subscription plan.

You can’t do it automatically when you sign up through their questionnaire, but you do have that option if you’re willing to reach out to their customer service team.

No pre-portion guideline

I find it peculiar that some dog food brands offer custom meal plans but don’t store their meals in pre-portioned packaging.

This would eliminate the brainwork at mealtime.

Spot & Tango’s meal pouches aren’t pre-portioned, so pet owners do need to refer to the portion guidelines to make sure they’re not overfeeding or underfeeding their dogs.

Copper and Skye didn’t receive individual meal pouches, unlike some brands that label their separate meals.

I’d love to see this from Spot and Tango in the future!

Storage & Freezer Space Requirements

You will need to make space in your fridge and freezer for Spot and Tango’s fresh meals.

This might be a hassle for some pet owners who are used to feeding dry dog food that can be stored in the cupboard.

But this isn’t unique to Spot and Tango. It’s the case with all fresh dog food and raw dog food subscription companies.

Is Spot And Tango Worth It? Our Verdict

Spot and Tango Our Verdict
Copper and Skye eating Spot and Tango (Photo: Life With Klee Kai)

Spot and Tango offer a premium service, and their prices have increased since we first reviewed their dog dood back in 2023.

As I mentioned earlier, I paid $220 when I first tested their food on my Klee Kai. In 2026, I only ordered their beef recipe, and it cost me $300.48.

I will give them credit for transparent pricing so you can figure out which recipes best fit your budget.

As a company, they’ve got some good practices, including transparent packaging, simple yet high-quality recipes, and two pet food formats.

I would consider Spot and Tango worth it if you’ve exhausted UnKibble or other fresh dog food brands and you’re looking to try something new.

But my cost was already high for two small dogs. Your price may vary based on the number and size of your dogs.

Spot and Tango are a good option, and they’re worth it if their fresh food turns your picky eater into a food-motivated dog.

But there are some other fresh dog food brands that are cheaper.

How We Tested Spot And Tango

Spot and Tango Honest Review and Results
Copper and Skye with their Spot and Tango food (Photo: Life With Klee Kai)

I’ve tested Spot and Tango every year since returning to the USA in 2023 to keep this pros-and-cons article up to date.

Usually, we’ll place an order and feed their fresh food to Copper and Skye for the month.

Skye is a really fussy eater, but she did show interest in Spot and Tango initially. Copper is food motivated, and he was excited by their food, as I would expect.

However, Skye started to show more hesitation at mealtime as the week progressed. By the end of week two, she had begun refusing her meals.

Now, Skye is a fussy eater, and her experience isn’t reflective of all dogs. Copper, for instance, was consistent in his excitement for Spot and Tango.

I’m not a pet nutritionist or veterinarian, but I believe Spot and Tango’s food was a little drier than Skye’s used to. That may have played a part.

A Day In The Life Feeding Spot And Tango

Skye waits for Spot and Tango lamb recipe (Photo: Life With Klee Kai)

Spot and Tango will ship your fresh meals frozen in your first delivery.  You’ll have to store most of the meals in the freezer and keep a couple defrosted in the fridge

Typically, I’d have two or three pouches defrosted in the fridge, ready to serve Copper and Skye.

I’d grab a meal pouch in the morning and open it using their easy-to-peel packaging.

Their meal pouches aren’t preportioned, so I’d consult the feeding guideline to make sure I get the portions correct.

From that point, it’s as easy as scooping the right amount into Copper and Skye’s respective bowls.

Once I’m done, I’ll put the meal pouch back in the fridge until dinnertime when I repeat the same process,

Spot and Tango don’t offer a meal container. So I use tupperware to make sure the meal pouch doesn’t create a mess in the fridge if there’s still some fresh food left.

Wrapping Up

Spot and Tango Wrapping Up
Skye with Spot and Tango (Photo: Life With Klee Kai)

We’ve reached the end of my article on the pros and cons of Spot & Tango’s fresh dog food.

There’s a lot to like about their fresh dog food, including transparent labelling, high-quality ingredients, and rip-and-serve packaging.

But we ultimately didn’t stick with it because there weren’t enough recipes, and Skye was fussy.

You may find your dog loves Spot & Tango, and they’ve got a good reputation with pet owners in the US.

While I don’t think you’ll go wrong with the brand, there are other options I’d be more inclined to try before Spot & Tango.
