Are you ready to embrace a frozen raw diet for you dog but you want to know the best brands for picky eaters?
My Alaskan Klee Kai dogs used to be fussy with their food, but we’ve seen a remarkable change in their eating habits since we switched to frozen raw.
Skye, in particular, was extremely picky and we’ve spent many stressful nights at the emergency vet because she’s refusing to eat and vomiting bile.

Fortunately, we came across frozen raw dog food, and our Klee Kai dogs have been transformed from picky eaters into food-motivated mini huskies.
In this article, we’re going to share the best frozen raw dog food brands, whether you care about recipe variety, ease of use, or affordability.

Overall Winner: We Feed Raw

If you’re ready to switch your pup to a frozen raw diet, and you’d like to start with Copper and Skye’s favorite brand, you’ll want to order We Feed Raw. Frankly, we’ve never seen Skye react to a dog food brand the way she has with We Feed Raw. It’s changed her!
Skye is no longer fussy at mealtime. She shows real mealtime excitement as she follows me to the fridge, watches as I empty the contents of the pouch into her bowls, runs rings around me as I move around the kitchen, before devouring her food. This has never happened with any other pet food brand!
We Feed Raw offers six different recipes (chicken, beef, duck, turkey and lamb) so you can alternate the protein in your dog’s bowl. They provide a custom meal plan and provide clear instructions on how to portion your pet’s food. The pouches tend to range from 4oz to 8oz, so it’s handy if you’re feeding 4oz every mealtime, but you may need to use electronic scales like me if your dog requires a portion size smaller than the pouch size.
They provide human-grade USDA-quality meat in custom recipes shipped to your door. So it’s not a surprise that they do charge a premium price. Copper and Skye’s food costs $250 a month, but it’s worth the price considering the positive impact We Feed Raw has made on Skye.

Best For Supplement-Style Formulas: Maev

Supplements are a growing market in the pet space, and while we haven’t really featured supplements on our website, we have showcased Maev. They’re a frozen raw dog food brand who have created a range of supplement-style recipes.
While Maev offer beef, chicken and lamb recipes, they stand out from the other frozen raw food brands in this ultimate guide because they formulate their meals to target specific health conditions. You can choose between digestive health, supporting mobility, healthy coat and calming formulations.
Copper and Skye have separation anxiety, although it has improved a lot over the years. But we opted for their Anxiety & Calming recipe. It did seem to help our Alaskan Klee Kai dogs. They enjoyed the recipes immensely, and their food is vibrant with chunks of meat, fruit and vegetables clearly visible.
Maev is expensive, just like We Feed Raw. We paid around $200 for a month’s supply of food for our Klee Kai dogs. Copper and Skye started to pick out the fruit and vegetables from their bowl and leave their leftovers on the floor. That’s the only reason we stopped Maev. But they loved the recipes otherwise!

Best For Convenience: Stella & Chewy

Stella & Chewy is a widely-recognised dog food brand thanks to their presence in most pet food stores. We’ll be discussing their frozen raw patties and frozen raw morsels for the purposes of this guide, although they do offer a range of different pet food formats.
When we first moved back to California from the UK, we relied heavily on their frozen raw morsels. It was handy being able to pop to our local Pet Food Express and grab a bag for my Klee Kai dogs. So they get top marks for convenience as you don’t have to wait for your subscriptions delivery.
While they have a high meat content of 95% in their recipes made up of meat, organs and bones, they lack the customization you’ll get with a dog food delivery company. So that’s something to keep in mind! However, they do have lots of proteins available: chicken, beef, lamb, duck, turkey, rabbit, surf ’n turf, fish.
You can buy Stella & Chewy’s at your local pet store or through Amazon. Their prices range from around $27 to $54 per bag. It depends on the bag size! We always find a good variety at our local pet store, and my Klee Kai dogs liked eating their morsels served directly from the freezer.

Best For Superfoods: Viva Raw

Viva Raw are another well-known brand who offer a range of recipes across different formats. We’ve directly compared our experience feeding We Feed Raw and Viva Raw, which you can read about here.
Their menu includes beef, chicken, turkey, rabbit and duck recipes. So that’s a good range if you’re looking to regularly alternate the protein in your dog’s bowl. Viva Raw include superfoods in their recipes, such as green mussels and shiitake mushrooms.
It wasn’t a surprise to me that Copper and Skye enjoyed their Viva Raw food for the most part. We did notice some slight pickiness from Skye towards the end of our order but it’s a good option if you’ve already tried other brands without success.
We paid $266 for a subscription to Viva Raw, which is a little more than We Feed Raw. However, my Klee Kai dogs preferred We Feed Raw overall. I would also recommend keeping an eye on recalls because Viva Raw has issued some in the past.

Best For Affordability: Steve’s Real Food

I wanted to share another brand that we use if we’re in a bind and can’t get our hands on any of the aforementioned options. Steve’s Real Food is a raw dog food company who you may have spotted in Whole Foods, where we first saw it.
While this company offers freeze-dried raw dog food, they have a limited range of frozen raw recipes if your dog prefers that format. You can select from chicken, beef and turkey.
We liked the convenience of being able to pop to our local Whole Foods to buy it, or order for same-day delivery on Amazon. It’s affordable at $39.99 for 5lbs. So it’s a good option if you’ve got a limited budget or perhaps you’d like to given frozen raw a try before committing to a subscription plan.
Copper and Skye liked Steve’s Real Food but I wouldn’t say it was their favorite on this particular list. But they have good reviews on Amazon, with an average of 4.8 stars.

Best For Experience: Darwin’s Pet Products

We’re almost at the end of our guide but I wanted to share one final raw food brand that we’ve tried both in the UK and in the USA. Darwin’s Pet Products is an experienced company, having operated for quite some time. They were selling raw food before its surge in popularity in the last few years.
Founded in 2004, Darwin’s Pet Products currently offer three different formats within their range: Natural Selections, BioLogics, and Intelligent Design. You can select from a range of proteins, including beef, chicken, turkey, duck and lamb.
Their meal packets are significantly bigger than We Feed Raw and Viva Raw, so we found them harder to store in our freezer. We found their service to have slightly less customization than we expected when ordering through their site. However, they’ve made improvements in recent years.
Darwin’s Pet Products have faced recalls on some products in the past, so we’d recommend pet owners do careful research before deciding to buy. We didn’t stick with Darwin’s long term, but this is just a quick summary of our experience, which was good but our Klee Kai preferred other brands.

Wrapping Up

We’ve reached the end of ultimate guide to the best frozen raw dog food that we’ve tried and tested over the past four years since returning to the US.
Our favorite is We Feed Raw because they transformed Skye from a fussy eater into a food motivated dog. It’s been a remarkable change in her.
We like that We Feed Raw offer a range of recipes, use high-quality ingredients, and their deliveries always arrive frozen to be popped straight in our freezer.
While there are some other good options in this comparison guide, We Feed Raw would be my recommendation if you’ve got a picky eater like us.
