Are you contemplating a change to your dog’s diet, but you can’t decide between UnKibble and The Farmer’s Dog?
Having moved back to California from the UK in 2023 with my Alaskan Klee Kai, I started my search to find the best fresh dog food in the USA to give to Copper and Skye.
There’s fresh dog food, fresh dry dog food, raw dog food, and more if you’re a dog owner who wants to ditch canned food or traditional kibble in favor of a new approach.

We’re going to be taking a look at two of the leading dog food brands in the USA – UnKibble and The Farmer’s Dog – to see if either could be a good fit for you and your dog.
I’ll run through how UnKibble and The Farmer’s Dog create their recipes, how their subscription plan works, how much their food costs, and give our verdict.
UnKibble Or The Farmer’s Dog: Who Do We Recommend?

Let’s get straight to the key part of our article – would I recommend UnKibble or The Farmer’s Dog?
Well, it’s a difficult choice. If you’re ready to make a change to your dog’s meals, you’ll need to decide whether you want to feed fresh food meals or customized dry dog food.
While I’d typically lean towards fresh frozen meals, I’d give UnKibble the nod ahead of The Farmer’s Dog.
While there wasn’t a lot of difference in terms of Copper and Skye’s enjoyment of UnKibble and The Farmer’s Dog, I believe UnKibble is more convenient from a dog owner’s perspective.

Although it’s dry food, UnKibble contains USDA beef and other USDA-approved meat. I felt good knowing that I didn’t have to compromise on dog food containing fresh foods.
I loved that UnKibble comes with a handy customized scooper to make it easy to serve your dog and get the portions right.
Once you’ve fed your dog their dry food, you can reseal the bag and pop it back in the cupboard rather than having to make space in your fridge or freezer.
The Farmer’s Dog doesn’t provide a container for their meals, and their meal pouches can’t be resealed, so it gets a bit messy with thawed dog food in your fridge.
There’s a big difference in price. UnKibble is nearly $55 cheaper than The Farmer’s Dog on a monthly basis. That’s over $600 a year!
While you won’t go wrong with The Farmer’s Dog if you do opt to go with The Farmer’s Dog recipes, my pick would be UnKibble.
UnKibble

UnKibble is a range of dry dog food created by experienced dog food company Spot & Tango. They created UnKibble to provide dog owners with a dry dog food format that’s balanced and complete, unlike unhealthy store-bought kibble.
UnKibble uses limited-ingredient recipes made from human-grade ingredients to ensure your dog is eating a natural diet free from any additives, preservatives, or nasties. They use 100% fresh, whole ingredients in their recipes that are gently dried at low temperatures to ensure maximum flavor, and the nutrients are locked in.
Spot & Tango requires dog owners to fill out a sign-up questionnaire to get started, so they can tailor their UnKibble recipe to meet your dog’s needs.
UnKibble offers four recipes (correct at the time of writing) – chicken and brown rice, beef and barley, cod and salmon, and turkey and sweet potato. Once you’ve completed the sign-up process, Spot and Tango will ship UnKibble direct to your door.

UnKibble’s bags are resealable, so you can store your fresh dog food in the cupboard rather than taking up space in your fridge or freezer like fresh frozen meals.
I wouldn’t typically feed dry dog food to Copper and Skye because they’ve been accustomed to eating fresh dog food brands such as The Farmer’s Dog or Nom Nom.
However, I was intrigued by UnKibble because I saw that their healthy dog food costs 40% less than fresh frozen meals. So, I placed an order to test UnKibble.
Spot & Tango has created a great sign-up questionnaire that’s easy to use, designed well and asks lots of important questions about your canine companion.

Once I completed the questionnaire, I received my quote for Copper and Skye’s meals. My Alaskan Klee Kai’s UnKibble meals cost me $34.64 per week or $138.56 per month.
Copper and Skye really enjoyed their Chicken and Beef recipes, but they didn’t like their fish or turkey recipes. Once a few weeks had passed, Copper was still content eating UnKibble, but I noticed that Skye started to leave half of her meals despite initially enjoying them.
From a dog owner’s perspective, I appreciated the fact that UnKibble provided a customized scooper with their fresh dog food to ensure portion control and make it easy to feed their fresh food.
It was great that I could store UnKibble fresh food recipes in the cupboard rather than taking up space in the fridge or freezer like frozen fresh food meals.
The Farmer’s Dog

The Farmer’s Dog has created a range of healthy dog food recipes using human-grade ingredients and pre-portioned in ready-to-serve meal pouches.
The Farmer’s Dog’s fresh recipes have been formulated by board-certified veterinary nutritionists to ensure your pup is eating a fresh food diet that’s balanced and complete.
The Farmer’s Dog offers four recipes – beef, chicken, pork, and turkey. It represents good recipe variety if you’ve got picky dogs who like different proteins.
To get started with The Farmer’s Dog, you’ll need to complete their sign-up questionnaire to allow the fresh dog food company to tailor their recipes to meet your dog’s needs.

They pre-portioned their meals by indicating on each meal pouch how much food to feed your dog, which is something I haven’t seen with other dog food subscription services.
Once I got my hands on their food, I was really impressed by how The Farmer’s Dog labeled Skye and Copper’s meals, unlike most fresh food brands.
In doing so, I was able to feed the correct meals to my Klee Kai – Skye was eating meals to gain weight, and Copper’s meals were aimed at helping him lose weight.
Another great feature is their pre-portioned meals. I appreciated that The Farmer’s Dog gave a feeding guideline on each meal pouch to remove the guesswork.

Copper and Skye liked The Farmer’s Dog and they cleaned their bowls at every mealtime for the first few weeks. However, I did find that they preferred the chicken and beef recipes.
Having been fed fresh food meals for the best part of six years, I must admit that my Klee Kai weren’t as enthusiastic about The Farmer’s Dog as they were for other fresh dog foods in the UK.
The Farmer’s Dog is one of the most affordable options for pet parents who are looking for the best fresh frozen meals in the pet food industry.
Feeding The Farmer’s Dog cost me $5.12 a day (or $204.80 every 40 days), which I felt represented excellent value. Alternatively, I could pay $193 for a 30-day supply.
Wrapping Up – Our Final Thoughts

We’ve reached the end of our comparison article, taking a look at UnKibble dry food and The Farmer’s Dog fresh meals.
As I said above, pet parents will need to decide whether they want to feed dry dog food or fresh frozen meals. While I’ve fed both of these pet food formats to Copper and Skye, my recommendation would be UnKibble.
I felt Copper and Skye enjoyed UnKibble and The Farmer’s Dog in equal measure, but I felt UnKibble was slightly more convenient than The Farmer’s Dog.
While UnKibble isn’t 40% cheaper than The Farmer’s Dog, despite Spot & Tango’s claims online, there’s no doubt UnKibble is slightly more affordable.
Overall, I don’t think you’ll go wrong with either of these dog food delivery companies. But, UnKibble edges it.
